Box Score 2 Junior Andrea Schell (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) scored her seventh home run of the season to help The College at Brockport softball team take game two, 9-1 in six innings against Geneseo after falling to the Knights in game one of Saturday's State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader in Brockport, NY. Saturday was also Senior Day and the Golden Eagles honored the three seniors, Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) and Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) in their final season.
In game one, the Golden Eagles nearly came from behind but ended up losing 3-2.
Geneseo was the first to get on the scoreboard after a scoreless first innings. The Knights followed up a Golden Eagle error with a big hit to right field to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. In the top of the third, Geneseo added another run off of a sacrifice fly to centerfield and tallied a third run in the top of the fourth after another big hit to centerfield.
Brockport finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) reached first on an error from the first baseman. Schell followed with a big double to center field, scoring Harris for the Golden Eagles first run of the game. The next batter, Dumas, reached first on a fielding error from the Knight's second baseman. With runners on first and third, Rosenbarker ripped a double to centerfield bringing in Schell.
Trailing by only one run, Brockport could not find the runs they need in the final three innings of the game. In the fifth and sixth innings, the Golden Eagles had runners in scoring position, but could not capitalize. Both teams closed out the last three innings scoreless.
Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) recorded the loss in the circle. Kibling pitched the first four innings of game one, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) relieved in the final three innings of the game, allowing zero runs on zero hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Offensively, Schell and Rosenbarker each finished 1-for-3 from the plate with one RBI. Schell also added a run scored. Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) both went 1-for-2, while Johnson went 1-for-3.
Brockport came out ready to take the win in game two. This time the Golden Eagles were the first to get on the scoreboard and they never looked back.
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) started things off in the bottom of the first inning with a single to left center field. Harris followed up with a single to center field. With batters on first and second, Schell ripped her second double of the day, scoring Ferchen. Rosenbarker hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, helping Harris score.
In the bottom of the third, Brockport added three more runs to their lead to go up 5-0. The Golden Eagles took advantage of a Geneseo error and two big hits. Pinch hitter Amanda Yuhas (Hamburg, NY/Eden) stepped up to the plate and ripped a single to left field to score Schell. At the end of the inning, Johnson nailed a ball right up the middle for two RBI's, but the designated player was thrown out trying to reach second to close out the inning.
The Knights scored their first run of the game in the top of the sixth to cut the Brockport lead to four. However, the Golden Eagles score four runs on two hits to take an eight run lead in the bottom of the sixth and end the game.
Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) scored the first run of the inning after a wild pitch from Geneseo. Harris hit a single to right center field on the next play to score Ferchen. Schell ended the game and sealed the Golden Eagles win with a two run homer to left center field.
Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) recorded her seventh win of the season in the circle. Berger pitched six innings, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Three different Brockport players finished the game hitting 2-for-4 from the plate. Ferchen was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Harris was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Schell was also 2-for-4 and tallied two runs and three RBI's. Johnson finished the game 2-for-2 from the plate with two RBI's.
Brockport returns to action on Monday for a rescheduled home SUNYAC doubleheader against Fredonia starting at 3 pm.
