Box Score Nina Tassone (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored five points, but The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team could not hang onto their first half lead, falling to a strong Cortland team 14-8 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Tuesday afternoon in Cortland, NY.
Neither team managed to get on the board in the first 10 minutes of the game. Brockport (7-4, 1-3 SUNYAC) struggled to get going offensively, turning the ball over frequently and Cortland (10-0, 4-0 SUNYAC) could not get shots on goal.
The Red Dragons were the first to strike with a goal at 17:18, but Brockport quickly answered back. After a big save from goalkeeper Remle Harr (Farmington, NY/Fairport), the Golden Eagles wasted little time getting the ball down the field and Tassone tallied her first goal of the game to tie things up.
Cortland responded with a goal on the very next play. The Red Dragons won the draw control and sped down the field to take a 2-1 lead at 14:43. Minutes later, the Red Dragons scored again to take a two goal lead.
Hailey Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) brought the Golden Eagles to within one goal after finishing off of a pass from Makensie Schuber (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) at 9:48.
With 7:15 left in the first half, a goal from Kelly Wall (Clifton Park, NY/ Shenendehowa) tied the game back up at 3.
The Red Dragons managed to gain the lead back fast, scoring their fourth goal of the game at 6:24.
To close out the first half, Brockport forced Cortland into key turnovers and took advantage of a Red Dragon yellow card. Liz Algie (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) finished off a pass from Wall on a free position opportunity to tie the game and then Wall scored a man-up goal in the last second of the half to give Brockport a one goal lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, Cortland quickly tied the game back up at 27:12 and then pushed out to a one goal lead at 22:08. However, Brockport once again answered back to bring the game to its fifth tie. Tassone recorded the goal, her 18th of the season.
With 10:14 on the scoreboard, Cortland took the lead for good. The Red Dragons outscored Brockport 7-1 in the final minutes of the game. Cortland's offensive speed on top of strong goalkeeping kept Brockport from making a comeback.
Tassone led the Golden Eagle offense with four goals and one assist for five points. Wall tallied two goals and one assist, while Algie and Boronczyk each recorded one goal. Colleen Hathaway (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) led the defense with four caused turnovers and three groundballs.
Harr recorded the loss in goal. She played all 60:00 and made six saves.
Brockport returns to action at home on Saturday at 11 am for a SUNYAC matchup against New Paltz
