Box Score Juniors Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) and Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) had three hits each as The College at Brockport Softball team scored a 7-4 victory over Cortland on the second day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament in Oneonta.
Brockport (25-9) was to play a second game Friday against Oneonta but the game was moved to Saturday at 11 am due to a late start time Friday night.
Brockport and Oneonta are the only two remaining teams in the tournament without a loss.
On Friday, Brockport scored a run in the top of the first to take the early lead and exploded for four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a commanding 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Cortland tried to come back scoring four runs but had its rally cut short as starter Korey Kibling (Lafayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) completed the game for her ninth win of the season.
Ferchen opened the game with the first of her three hits on the day with a bunt single down the third base line. She moved to second on a ground out and came home as Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) singled up the middle giving Brockport the early 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Golden Eagles started the inning for four consecutive singles including one each by Ferchen and Rivers. The big hit in the inning came off the bat of Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) hit a bases loaded single down the left field line that scored both Ferchen and Harris.
In the sixth, Brockport added to its lead as Nicole Atkins (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) started the rally with a one out single and took second base on an outfield error. Rivers followed with a single to left field and moved to second on another outfield error by the Red Dragons that allowed Atkins to score.
Ferchen came up next and singled up the middle scoring Rivers to cap the scoring for the Golden Eagles.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cortland put together five hits and pushed four runners across the plate before Kibling induced an infield ground out to end the game.
Cortland was forced to use three different pitchers as Brockport hammered out 11 hits. The trio combined for just one strikeout in the game.
Rivers finished 3-for-3 and Ferchen was 3-for-4 for Brockport. Rivers and Ferchen each scored twice while Atkins was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Harris led the way with two runs batted in.
