Box Score Sophomore Aaron White (North Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) made two clutch free throws at the end of the game to lead The College at Brockport to a 71-68 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Geneseo Friday evening in Carl Schrader Gymnasium on the Knight's campus.
Brockport's (9-8, 6-4 SUNYAC) strong defense led to 27 points off of turnovers. The Golden Eagles swiped the ball from Geneseo 14 times, including a game-high six from Levi Pace (Medina, NY/Medina). The turnovers helped Brockport mask the discrepancy in rebounding as the Knights grabbed 38 compared to the Golden Eagle's 25 through the game.
The Golden Eagles took an early lead in the first half when Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) stole the ball from Geneseo and pushed it up court. Lyerly passed the ball to White who hit a jumper. Patrick Modzelewski (Brooklyn, NY/Msgr. McClancy) made a three pointer on Brockport's next two possessions keeping the Green and Gold on top. About five minutes into the action, Pace grabbed an offensive rebound before passing it to Modzelewski who converted the play with a layup. The bucket gave Brockport a 12-6 lead, prior to a 10-0 run by Geneseo. The Knights took control for the majority of the remaining time in the half and held a 34-23 advantage at the break.
In the second half Brockport slowly chipped away at the Knight's lead. With more than eight minutes remaining Matthew Smith (East Northport, NY/Northport) stole a ball from Geneseo as a Knight attempted to send the ball into the lower block. Smith raced down the court to make a layup and tie the game at 51-51. A minute later, Lorenzo Joseph (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) made a three pointer  after Brockport used some nice passing to leave Joseph with an open shot from beyond the arc. The basket by Smith began a 10-0 run for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport built a 68-57 lead with 1:37 remaining in the game, however Geneseo would not throw in the towel just yet. The Knights went on an 11-1 run in a 40 second span, to trail by only one with four seconds remaining. White was fouled with three seconds left and made two clutch free throws to give Brockport a 71-68 lead, and a three point cushion. Geneseo put up a contested three point shot from half court that careened off the rim.
Modzelewski led Brockport with 16 points and tied for the team-lead in rebounds with Pace, as they both secured five apiece. White added 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor, while adding a perfect percentage from the line nailing both free throws late in the game. Mike Gallagher (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) also reached double digit points with 10, including two three pointers. Smith dished out five assists while Lyerly added four as the team totaled 16 in the game.
Brockport travels to Cortland Tuesday February 3 for a 5:30 pm SUNYAC contest and returns home Friday to host Geneseo at 5:30 pm on February 6.
