BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Soccer team won for head coach Joan Schockow on a day selected to commemorate the coach and all her accomplishments through the years for the Green and Gold. Brockport defeated Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game 2-0 Thursday afternoon on A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.
Brockport (6-4-3 Overall, 2-2-2 SUNYAC) was outshot in the game 19-10 but was able to capitalize on its opportunities snapping a three game scoreless streak.
Going into the second half with the score 0-0 Brockport captured the lead in the 48th minute of play when Stefanie Drago flicked a cross pass from Olivia Kuter into the back of the net for her first score of the season. Kuter sent the ball from a far distance as Drago raced into the box to position herself for the shot that she struck directly in air to give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 lead.
Brockport's attack was relentless towards the end of the game as they were set on sealing the victory for coach Schockow. As the public announcement was made for the last minute remaining in regulation, Kaitlin Niedermeier possessed the ball with a single Red Dragon defender on her. She drilled a low lying line drive towards the net in which the goalkeeper made a nice diving save. Teammate Chelsea Stahl swooped in for the cleanup as she tapped the ball in for the 2-0 lead and final score of the game.
Golden Eagle keeper Catherine Eliasson played a superb game that her seven saves do not accurately depict. She was not only perfect in shots on net but she cleared several potential game-changing plays from the Brockport box on Cortland corner and free-kicks.
The Green and Gold return to action Saturday against Oswego at 1 pm on the A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field and will honor the senior members of the squad during pregame announcements.
