BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's soccer team earned a crucial win in a State University of New York Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon as they downed Oswego State 3-2 on Senior Day at A Huntley Parker Junior Field. The two conference wins this weekend earned Brockport six points to propel themselves to fifth place in the SUNYAC standings.
Brockport (7-4-3 overall, 3-2-2 SUNYAC) got the scoring started early in the 7th minute of play as Stefanie Drago fed the ball to Christina Leonardo who buried the ball in the top left corner to give Brockport an early 1-0 lead over Oswego State (7-7-1, 2-5-1).
That's all the scoring the first half would see as strong defense from both sides held the shots to 10-7 in Oswego's favor.
The Golden Eagles took advantage of a corner kick in the 52nd minute when Kaitlyn Niedermeier found the back of the net on a strong kick from Drago who picked up her second assist of the game.
The Lakers answered back five minutes later, scoring after a shuffle in front of net to cut Brockport's lead to 2-1.
During the 70th minute of play Chelsea Bowers lured the goalie out of the net with a cross pass. Emily Boehm capitalized on the open net for her first goal of the season to give Brockport a 3-1 lead.
Oswego took control of the game and had possession for a large portion of the second half. With less than 10 minutes remaining the Lakers earned a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Catherine Eliasson held her composure to make the initial save but Oswego pounced on the rebound and netted it to cut the Brockport lead in half making the score 3-2.
The Lakers had multiple chances to tie the game in the final minutes but Eliasson stood her ground making four saves in the final four minutes of play.
Niedermeier, Leonardo and Boehm each finished with one goal while Drago picked up two assists and Bowers had one assist. Courtney Szczesniak led the offense with three shots, two of which were on goal. Sabrina DeBellis, Ashley Makowski, Olivia Kuter, Amy Dotterweich and Lauren Moore each had one. Eliasson finished with 17 saves and two goals allowed in her seventh win of the season.
The Golden Eagles have two regular season games remaining both of which are vital conference matchups. Brockport will head to Potsdam Friday at 1 p.m. then to Plattsburgh Saturday at 1 p.m.
