Brockport boasts Homecoming Win Over Alfred State, 59-7

Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team capped off the homecoming festivities on Saturday, posting a convincing 59-7 win over Alfred State College.

Brockport (3-1) got things rolling right from the start, when Nick Vallone returned the opening kickoff 96-yards to post an early 7-0 lead after a Tyler Perna extra point found its way through the uprights.

The Golden Eagles were firing on all accounts, as the defensive unit stepped up big on several occasions, forcing two three-and-outs on Alfred's opening two possessions.

The offense took advantage of the defensive prowess, when the Golden Eagle ground game found the end zone on two different occasions. Dan Andrews carried the ball in for his first score of the day at the 6:28 mark, followed by fellow running back Ray Johnson who worked into the end zone on the Golden Eagles next possession for a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Alfred was able to work in a score in the beginning of the second period, a spark that would ignite the Brockport offense. On the next Brockport drive the Green and Gold turned 7-plays and 51-yards into six points when Andrews added his second rushing touchdown of the night to pull ahead 28-7.

After another Pioneer three-and-out forced by a pair of tackles for loss, and a sack, the Green and Gold offensive efficiency improved, as they only needed 31 seconds and three plays to pickup another touchdown. Andrews, no stranger to the end zone, worked his way in for his third score of the day and the 35-7 Brockport advantage, which they would take into the halftime break.

The offensive production didn't miss a beat despite the break in action, as the Green and Gold saved 24-points for the second half.  After a big defensive play when the Golden Eagles sacked the Pioneer punter, the Brockport offense posted their sixth score of the contest, this time a 44-yard field goal from Perna to push ahead 38-7.

Brockport's offense didn't have much time to rest, as the defense's Nathaniel Keith III recovered a fumble on the next play.

Head coach Jason Mangone's offense continued to run like a well-oiled machine, as Bonsell would throw for two more touchdowns in the quarter. Bonsell's second score of the day came at the 8:59 mark, this time in the form of a Nate Wilkinson completion. On the successive drive, Bonsell would connect again for points, this time to Jerry Thompson to give the Golden Eagles a comfortable 52-7 lead through the end of the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles saved their final score for the final period of play.  Kevin Carr picked up 46-yards on the drive, and found the end zone for his first touchdown of the season. The Greed and Gold defense would hold on, making the final score, 59-7 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

The Brockport rushing squad had a solid day, with five touchdowns spread between three Golden Eagles. Andrews picked up 170-yards on the ground, with three separate trips to the end zone. Carr added 46-yards and a TD, with Ray Johnson adding 45-yards and a score. Vallone chipped in 40 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Bonsell threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite targets included Thompson, who picked up 74 yards and a touchdown. Andrews had two catches for 28-yards, with Wilkinson adding 23-yards and a touchdown completion.

The Green and Gold defense had a strong performance, holding their opponents to 189 yards of total offense, including -10-yards on the ground. Alex Egglinger led the pack with eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss of 12 yards. Tarik Bennett, Jacob Cotriss and Keith III all had six stops on the day, with Bennett picking up three tackles for a loss of seven yards, and Keith working for a big sack for a 10-yard loss.

The Golden Eagles will stay home for their next contest, a conference matchup against Utica College on Oct. 10 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Be sure to stay up to date with all your Golden Eagle scores and awards by following @BportAthletics on Twitter and by liking the "Brockport Golden Eagles" Facebook page.
