BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team continued their hot start on Sunday, downing D'Youville College in decisive fashion, 72-50.
The Golden Eagles improve to 2-0 on the young season while the Spartans fall to 0-2 to begin the 2015-2016 campaign.
Hannah Spencer and
Schyler Laux got things started, with a trey from Spencer and a fast-break bucket from Laux to take an early 5-0 lead. The first quarter saw a lot of back and fourth action, but it was a
Hannah Rehbaum lay-in that would give the Green and Gold squad the lead they would not relinquish, at 9-8 with 2:09 to play in the period.
A pair of lay-ups to close the quarter from Rehbaum and Olive Surh gave the Golden Eagles a 13-8 lead heading into the first break.
Head coach
Corinne Jones' squad went to work in the second quarter, and thanks to an 18-3 run, worked the Golden Eagles out to a 31-13 lead by the midway point in the period. The run included four three's, two from
Jenna Lividini and a trey from Surh and Spencer.
The Golden Eagles worked to continue to widen the gap, and were successful aided largely by points in the paint. A 7-2 run to close the half, with all of the field goals in the paint, helped Brockport take a 38-15 lead into the half.
At the midway point, the Golden Eagles were led by Surh, who netted nine points and had five rebounds. Spencer added eight to the team totals, with three assists. On the Spartans side, Darian Evans and Alexis Smith lead the way with four points apiece. The Brockport squad shot 34.1 percent from the field to their opponents 28.0 percent.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles continued to out match the Spartans, as they saw their lead reach 30 after a Lividi three made the count 52-22 with 3:18 to play.
The Golden Eagles flirted with a 30 point lead again, in the final quarter when Spencer strung together an old-fashioned three point play with a deep ball on back-to-back possessions to make the count 63-33 at the 7:06 mark. The Golden Eagles held on to post a 72-50 win.
Brockport forced 18 Spartan turnovers, which they capitalized into 17 points off turnovers. The Golden Eagles shot 34.7 percent from the field in the contest and connected on nine-threes. Brockport also netted 20 fast-break points in the outing.
The Golden Eagle offense was led by Spencer, who netted 16 points in the outing, a career high for the freshman. She also dished out five assists and snagged four rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Suhr, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, netted 11 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double at eight. The senior also handed out three assists and snagged three steals.
Faith Welch and Lividini added nine points each, with Welch adding three assists.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action in the Wendy's Classic, which will be held from Dec. 1 through the 5.
