ITHACA, N.Y. – Jeff Palmeri was the highest placing individual for The College at Brockport during the New York State Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Cornell University on Sunday, placing third in the 184-pound bracket in a tournament featuring several Division I programs.
Palmeri won two straight matches before losing on an 8-3 decision in the semifinal match. He won in convincing fashion, a technical fall 16-0 win for a chance at the third place finish. He defeated Brockport's rival SUNY Cortland in the opening round with a 16-0 technical fall before a pin in the first period at 2:55 sent him to the semifinal round. Palmeri dropped a close decision in the semifinal match, 8-3. For the third place match, Palmeri won a 5-0 decision against Ithaca's Carlos Toribio.
Assistant coach Walt Peterson was inducted into the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Hall of Fame for his contributions within the realm of the sport.
Reigning Brockport Athlete of the Week Triston Engle battled back from a loss in his first match to finish fifth at the 197-pound class. He won three straight matches for a chance at a third place finish. A loss in that third match, put Engle in a battle for fifth place. Engle won the fifth place match by pinning his opponent in 52 seconds.
Following the opening loss, Engle won two matches by pin, both within the first periods by combined times of 3:44. His other victory on the day came in a medical fall forfeit.
Asher Kramer also fared well Sunday moving along the ranks prior to an injury forcing him to sit out his fourth match of the day. Kramer won two close matches by decision with 4-3 and 3-2 wins before an injury cut his day short as he finished in sixth place.
Dillon Stowell was moving up the 125-pound ranks in the "B" open with two match victories by pins before an injury forced a medical fall in the semifinal match.
