DAYTONA, Fla. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team picked up a solid road win in triple-overtime on Monday in the Land of Magic Classic against Bridgewater State University, 100-95.
The Golden Eagles hold on and improve to 5-1 on the year, while the Bears fall to 3-6.
Patrick Modzelewski got things started right away for the Green and Gold, connecting on a deep ball to take the early 3-0 lead. That advantage would be short lived however, as each team traded turns with the lead through the opening minutes.
Brockport found itself forced to play catch-up as a 10-0 run from the Bears handed the Golden Eagles a nine-point deficit.
Ismael Pierre broke the scoring silence, working in the paint for a layup and a 15-8 score with 11:54 to play in the half.
Three straight scores from the Green and Gold evened the score at 24-24 with 4:14 to play, thanks to scores from
Matthew Smith and a pair of buckets from
Clifton Lyerly.
The Golden Eagles headed into the locker room trailing by eight after a 12-4 Bridgewater State run to close the half. At the midway point, Lyerly led the Golden Eagles with 10 points, with
Hamed Shamseldin adding seven points.
The Golden Eagles saw the Bears work out to their largest lead of the contest to open the second half, when by the 17:57 mark, Brockport trailed 43-28.
The Brockport offense got things going with a 12-2 run to cut the Bears lead to five with 14:22 left in regulation. The offense kept rolling, due in large part to Sahmseldin, who netted 16 straight Brockport points, reclaiming the lead at 56-53 with 10:24 to play.
The offensive production continued for the Green and Gold, as they reached their largest lead at the 3:17 mark after a Lyerly jumper gave Brockport a 74-63 lift.
Down the stretch, the Bears worked to chip away at the Golden Eagle lead. With 16 second to play,
Levi Pace worked for a tip-in, giving Brockport a three-point lead. With two seconds remaining, a BSU trey found its way home, forcing overtime.
The first overtime period was a low scoring affair, with a Pace lay-in in the opening 30 seconds the only field goal of the period. A pair of free throws were the only score for the Bears, forcing a second overtime with a score of 78-78.
The second overtime saw more offensive production than the first, as Pierre netted Brockport's first two buckets. After the Bears worked out to a four-point lead, the Golden Eagles erased the deficit and with nine seconds left, had built a three-point lead with free throws from Shamseldin and Pierre. Lightning struck twice for the Bears, as a last second three found its way home again, forcing a third overtime.
The Golden Eagles hit their stride in the final period of the contest. With the Bears on their heels, and forced to foul, the Golden Eagles used the charity stripe to seal the deal. A final three free-throws from Lyerly made the final count 100-95.
Shamseldin led all scorers with a career-high 31 points, shooting 10-of-20 from the floor, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and a perfect 8-8 from the line. Lyerly finished with a cool 20 points, six rebounds and three assists. Pace and Pierre added 14 and 13 points respectively, with Pierre one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.
Olusola Adeniran grabbed 10 rebounds to go with seven points.
Brockport notched 56 points in the paint, and turned in 26 points off 22 forced turnovers. The Green and Gold squad shot 42.0 percent from the floor, with a 35.7 percentage from three point range.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Dec. 29 against John Carroll University at 1 p.m. in the Land of Magic Classic.
