Box Score Two free throws from Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) in the final minute secured a win for The College at Brockport's Men's Basketball team as they beat Fredonia 82-79 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup Tuesday night in Fredonia.
Brockport (10-10 overall, 7-6 SUNYAC) led by six points to start the second half but Fredonia came back to tie it at 47 with 15 minutes remaining. Junior Patrick Modzelewski (Brooklyn, NY/Msgr. McClancy) responded with a three pointer and a layup but Fredonia tied the score at 52 moments later.
The Blue Devils struck again to take a three point lead but Lyerly drained a shot from behind the arc to bring the game to a 57-57 tied with just under 12 minutes left to play. Back and forth play gave Fredonia a three point lead a few minutes later but Lyerly made a free throw and a layup to erase Fredonia's lead.
At the 6:41 mark Fredonia took a 1-point lead but sophomore Aaron White (North Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) scored a layup on Brockport's next possession to take the lead back for Brockport. Two-three pointers from senior Mike Gallagher (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) and a layup from junior Daniel Aiello (Syracuse, NY/Solvay) helped Brockport go on a 10-4 run to take a 76-68 lead with 1:53 remaining in the game.
Fredonia cut the lead to three with 1:29 remaining but a three-point play from sophomore Levi Pace (Medina, NY/Medina) haulted Fredonia's comeback. Two free throws from Lyerly in the final minute helped Brockport hold on for a 82-79 victory.
The Golden Eagles led the entire first half with their largest lead of the game coming at 8:32 when two free throws from White gave them a 13 point lead. Brockport shot 57.7% in the first half while Fredonia shot 38.9%.
Modzelewski led all scorers with 23 points while shooting 4-for-4 from behind the line. Lyerly finished with 18 points while Pace led the defense with 5 defensive rebounds. Brockport made 53.7% of its shots to Fredonia's 40%.
The Golden Eagles return home this weekend as they host Oneonta Friday at 5:30 pm and New Paltz Saturday at 2 pm.
