Brockport's Last Minute Comeback Falls Short

Men's lacrosse opens the season with a 9-8 loss to Alfred University

Senior Justin Cook (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) led The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team in a fourth quarter comeback that fell just short in the Golden Eagles season opening 9-8 loss to Alfred University on the road.

Brockport (0-1) trailed 7-3 going into the final quarter of play before mounting a serious comeback. The Golden Eagles scored five goals in the fourth quarter but were unable to secure that game-tying score.

In the final two minutes of play, Brockport trailed by four goals with the score 9-5. Sophomore Brendan Fitzgerald (Baiting Hollow, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) passed the ball to Cook who scored with just under two minutes remaining. Jake Giudice (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) scored a minute later to bring the Golden Eagles within two.  Cook followed the score with a man up goal of his own with 14 seconds left in play.

Brockport won the faceoff and called a timeout with five seconds remaining. On the final play of the game the Golden Eagles ripped a low shot at the net but the Saxons goalie made an impressive save as time expired.

Cook got the scoring underway for the Golden Eagles in the second quarter trimming Brockport's deficit to 4-1. Fitzgerald assisted on Brockport's first goal of the 2015 season.

The Saxons answered back with two goals a minute apart, but Cook again helped the Golden Eagles keep the game close when he assisted on John Countryman's (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) goal with 30 seconds remaining in the half. Brockport trailed Alfred 6-2 at halftime.

Brockport and Alfred played both scored a single goal in the third quarter. Midway through the third quarter Casey Cleary (Cortland, NY/Homer) scored a man up goal with an assist being credited to Giudice. The Golden Eagles still trailed by four with the score 7-3 heading into the fourth quarter.

Senior Nick Ciampi (Jordan, NY/C.W. Baker) scored within the first 10 seconds of the fourth quarter on an unassisted goal. Senior Clifton Jackson (Snyder, NY/Amherst) assisted on another score from Cook with 10 minutes left to play.

Sophomore goalie Conor Nowak (Amherst, NY/Eden) finished the game with nine saves. The Golden Eagles are scheduled for their home opener this Wednesday against RIT at 4:00 pm.
