Box Score Sophomore Brendan Fitzgerald (Baiting Hollow, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) scored a goal and added an assist as The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team fell 9-3 in a nonconference game to Clarkson on a chilly Saturday afternoon on Brockport's Bob Boozer Field in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium.
Brockport (0-3) fell behind Clarkson early in the first quarter before two goals within the last two minutes of play nearly tied the score at 4-3. The Golden Eagles defense tightened up after the first quarter holding Clarkson to no more than two goals a quarter after the first. However Clarkson's defense kept Brockport off the board for the remainder of the game.
Two goals within the first five minutes of play put Brockport in a 2-0 deficit. The Golden Eagles utilized a penalty from Clarkson to score a man up goal with four minutes left in the first quarter. John Countryman (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) converted on a pass from Fitzgerald, sending his shot past the Golden Knights goalie.
Clarkson scored the next two goals, leading 4-1 with two minutes left in the first quarter. Fitzgerald scooped up a loose ball in front of the net and fired it into the back of the net for the Golden Eagles second goal of the game.
Thirty seconds later Brockport's Justin Cook (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) found the back of the net for his third consecutive game. Cook's sixth goal of the season was assisted by junior Nick Smith (Victor, NY/Canandaigua). The Golden Eagles trailed 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Sophomore goalie Conor Nowak (Amherst, NY/Eden) faced consistent pressure from the Golden Knights offense as he finished with 19 saves. Clarkson outshot the Golden Eagles 49-18, but Brockport was able to take advantage of its extra-man opportunities converting 1-of-3 compared to Clarkson's 1-of-5.
Brockport continues its nonconference home stand against St. John Fisher March 10 at 4 pm and is also scheduled to face Keuka March 14 at 2 pm.
