Box Score 2 Junior Alyssa Balfe (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) drove in two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give The College at Brockport softball team an 8-6 win over St. John Fisher College in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the Clark V. Whited Sports Complex after the Golden Eagles lost the first game 8-0 in five innings.
In the bottom of the sixth the Golden Eagles were trailing 6-5. Senior Ciara Condello (Rochester, NY/East Rochester) started a rally by hitting a one out single. Two straight walks loaded the bases for the Golden Eagles. With a full count, senior Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) drew a walk, tying the game at six. Balfe stepped up to the plate and drove in two runs off of a single down the left field line to give Brockport a two run lead.
Proper started off the second game driving in two runs on a hard hit double to right center to give Brockport (10-12 overall, 2-4 SUNYAC) a 2-0 lead in the first inning. St. John Fisher (18-6) answered back with three runs in the top of the second to take a one run lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, junior Amanda Yuhas (Hamburg, NY/Eden) hit a double to left center and advanced to third on a single from Condello. With runners on first and third with no outs, senior Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) reached first on a fielder's choice and drove in Yuhas to tie the game at three.
The Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the third but Brockport answered back with one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to one. With two outs, senior Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) singled down the left field line and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior Nicole Atkins (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville) singled to left field, scoring Lazzaro.
After a scoreless fourth, St. John Fisher extended their lead to two in the top of the fifth. With two runners in scoring position, Lazzaro singled through the left side to cut St. John Fisher's lead to 6-5.Â
Freshman Kelsi Nau (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) struck out two Cardinals in the bottom of the seventh as Brockport held on for the 8-6 win. Nau earned her first win of her Brockport career as she gave up three hits over four innings pitched while striking out six. Lazzaro was a perfect three-for-three at the plate in game two while Condello finished two-for-three.
In the first game of the afternoon Brockport lost 8-0 after five innings. St. John Fisher quickly took a 2-0 lead after the first inning but were unable to get a baserunner in the second as junior Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) struck out all three batters faced in the inning.
Brockport hosts Oswego tomorrow in a conference doubleheader starting at 3 pm.
