Box Score 2 Junior pitchers Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) and Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) both pitched complete game shutouts while striking out 22 batters combined in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader sweep at Brockport Friday afternoon and evening against Potsdam as the Golden Eagles won 4-0 and 5-0 in both contests.
Berger pitched the first game for Brockport in dominating fashion striking out 12 batters and giving up only two hits and one walk in seven innings pitched. Kibling also threw a complete game shutout striking out 10 while allowing six hits and one walk.
Brockport (14-12, 6-4 SUNYAC) bats gave the pitchers leads within the first inning of both games. In game one, Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) hit a one out double before stealing third base. With two outs cleanup hitter Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) drove in Harris after beating out a grounder hit to the left side of the infield that the shortstop made a lunging stop of the ball.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead in game two as well when Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) led the game off with a single down the third base line. She stole second base before advancing to third base on a passed ball. Harris earned a base on balls and helped to score Ferchen. Harris stole second base but with the shortstop covering the bag late, she missed the throw allowing Ferchen to easily score on the play as the ball went into the outfield.
Potsdam's best scoring chance in game two was during the sixth inning with one out and runners on first and second, Brockport appeared to be in a jam, however Kibling reached back for a little extra and struck out the next two batters to end the scoring opportunity.
Berger tore through the Bears lineup in game one as she struck out 12 batters, one off her season-high and career-high of 13. Berger struck out the side twice during game one. The Golden Eagles nearly gave up a run in game one during the top of the fifth as the team held a 3-0 lead. A throwing error with a runner on base allowed the runner to advance to third base who then attempted to score on a passed ball but third baseman Delaney Buckley (Utica, NY/Utica Notre Dame) beat the base runner in a sprint to home and tagged her out on a toss from the catcher Shelby Perry (Brockport, NY/Brockport).
Ferchen and Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) both had multiple hits for the Golden Eagles in game one with a run batted in. In game two, Ferchen finished the contest with multiple hits yet again and tied the Brockport record for most stolen bases in a single season with her 20th of the season. Junior Tabatha McBride (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) sent a shot to center field that easily cleared the fence for a two run home run.
The Golden Eagles return to the Clark V. Whited Complex on the campus of The College at Brockport for a doubleheader against SUNYAC opponent Plattsburgh with the action set to begin at noon. Prior to the start of the doubleheader the Brockport senior softball players will be honored with a small ceremony commemorating the players accomplishments as Golden Eagles.
