Box Score Senior Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) a couple of hits and runs batted in as The College at Brockport fell in back-to-back games to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponent Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon on the Brockport campus at Clark V. Whited Complex.
Brockport (14-14, 6-6 SUNYAC) lost 8-5 in game one and 4-0 in game two. The Golden Eagles bats went cold in game two, as the team was only able to combine for two hits in the entire action.
In game one, the Golden Eagles were led by Lazzaro. Lazzaro knocked in Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) with a single. Ferchen reached base on an infield single and stole second base to break her record of 20 stolen bases in a season which she set last year.
The Golden Eagles held a 1-0 lead until the Cardinals scored two runs in the fourth inning. After Plattsburgh tacked on another run in the sixth, Brockport tied the score with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Lazzaro started the rally with a leadoff single. Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) walked before Shelby Perry (Brockport, NY/Brockport) knocked in Lazzaro with a single, which also allowed Proper to score on an error by the Cardinals catcher.
The tie score was short lived as the Cardinals put up five runs in the top of the seventh, taking a commanding 8-3 lead. Despite the best efforts of Brockport to put forth a rally of its own in the bottom half of the inning, the comeback fell short.
The Golden Eagles loaded the bases in the seventh with Ciara Condello (Rochester, NY/East Rochester) and Ferchen reaching base on errors by the third baseman before a bunt single by Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). The two runs scored by Brockport came in painful fashion as Lazzaro and Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded.
In game two, Brockport's best scoring opportunity came in the first inning after Ferchen led the inning off with a bunt single. She advanced to second on a sac bunt from Harris. Lazzaro then hit the ball on a line that the pitcher made a quick reaction to snag for the second out of the inning.
Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) threw the complete game for Brockport allowing three earned runs in seven innings pitched while striking out two.
Brockport travels this week for all of its games. The doubleheader scheduled for April 22 against the University of Rochester has been cancelled making the road trip to Oneonta the next series of games for Brockport. The games are on Friday at 3 and 5 pm, before Brockport then travels to New Paltz on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
