Box Score 2 The College at Brockport Softball team tallied 20 hits including three home runs, five doubles and one triple en route to earning two conference wins Wednesday afternoon as they beat State University of New York Athletic Conference opponent Fredonia 9-1 and 10-9 in a doubleheader in Fredonia.
In game two of the series, Brockport (16-14 overall, 8-6 conference) jumped out to an early lead 4-0 lead in the top of the first as three straight hits scored four runs. Senior Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) tripled to right field, freshman Karleigh Eaton (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) hit a double down the left field line and junior Delaney Buckley (Utica, NY/Utica Notre Dame) hit a home run, all with two outs in the top of the first.
Fredonia (13-14, 8-6) answered back with three runs to make it a 4-3 game going into the second. The Golden Eagles scored one run in the top of the inning off of a single up the middle from junior Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). The Blue Devils scored one run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at five entering the third.
Proper drew a walk to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Eaton. Junior Alyssa Balfe (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) hit a single to centerfield, scoring Proper to give Brockport a 6-5 lead. Brockport held Fredonia scoreless in the bottom of the third.
With two outs in the fourth, Harris drew a walk and scored on a double to left field from senior Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego). Proper stepped up to the plate and blasted the ball over the left field fence, giving Brockport a 9-5 lead after four innings.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Brockport scored their final run of the game in the sixth after back-to-back doubles from Lazzaro and Proper. Fredonia rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs off of three hits. The Blue Devils had the tying run on second with one out but junior Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) secured the win for the Golden Eagles, forcing a pop-out and a strike out to end the game.
Proper finished the second game a perfect three-for-three at the plate with four runs batted in and crossing the plate three times herself. Berger struck out four over five and 1/3 innings in her eighth win of the season.
In game one of the doubleheader, Brockport was unable to get a runner on base until Balfe led off the third inning with a double up the middle. Balfe advanced to third on a single from senior Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta). Both runners would score as Harris ripped a double to left field, giving Brockport a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Fredonia scored one run in the bottom of the fourth but Brockport responded with six runs in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to 8-1. Proper and freshman Shelby Perry (Brockport, NY/Brockport) each hit a two-run single before Buckley launched a home run to left field to give Brockport a 8-1 lead. The Golden Eagles scored their final run of the game in the sixth as senior Nicole Atkins (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville) scored on a single from Harris.
Berger earned the win after pitching a complete game and striking out eight. Perry finished game one two-for-three at the plate with two runs batted in.
Proper finished the day an impressive four-for-six at the plate with six runs batted in off of a single, a double, a triple and a home run. Â Buckley hit two homers as she went three-for-seven at the plate with four runs batted in.
Brockport has four conference games remaining in the season. They travel to Oneonta Friday at 3 pm and New Paltz Saturday at 12 pm.
