Proper Homers in SUNYAC Opener

Brockport Softball drops two SUNYAC games to Cortland

Senior Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) had a pair of big hits for The College at Brockport Softball team picking up two runs batted in but the Golden Eagles were unable to overcome State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival Cortland's leads in both games of the Friday afternoon doubleheader at Clark V. Whited Sports Complex losing 4-2 in the Brockport home opener and 9-1 in the second game.

Brockport (7-9, 0-2 SUNYAC) used a strong fourth inning to jump back into the game following a three run inning from Cortland in the top of the third. Proper led the fourth inning off with a home run lining the ball far beyond the left field fence, clearing the scoreboard.

The Golden Eagles offense quickly sprung to life after Lindsay Wachna (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga) earned a base on balls following Proper's homer. Shannon Allen (Brockport, NY/Brockport) pinch ran for Wachna and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Alysaa Balfe (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany). Delaney Buckley (Utica, NY/Utica Notre Dame) jumped on the first good pitch she saw, drilling the ball into the gap for a double that easily scored Allen. The Red Dragons changed pitchers following Buckley's double and got the remaining two outs stranding a Golden Eagle runner on second.

Junior Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) pitched seven strong inning for Brockport, coming up just short while allowing only four hits and a single earned run.

The Golden Eagles started the second game off with two straight hits by Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) and Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) but were unable to capitalize on the back to back hits.

Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) singled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and the Golden Eagles trailing 9-0 before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Proper followed the wild pitch with a base knock to plate Rivers, the final score of the game.

Brockport's next matchup is a doubleheader on the road against Fredonia on April 8 at 3:00 and 5:00 pm.
