Box Score 2 The College at Brockport Softball team staved off elimination and stayed alive in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament Thursday afternoon with a 10-1 victory over Fredonia in its second game of the day after it had dropped a 6-1 contest to Geneseo in the morning on the host campus of Cortland.
Brockport's offense breathed some life into the Golden Eagles spirits as it rode three run home runs from Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) and Lindsay Wachna (Sryacuse, NY/Onondaga) to a soaring 10-1 win. Brockport will need to win out the remainder of its games in the tournament as they already experienced a loss in the double-elimination style format.
After a quiet game one offensively for the Golden Eagles, Brockport wasted little time before putting up runs in the second contest of the day following a quick one-two-three inning by the Blue Devils including two strike outs by Brockport's starting pitcher Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden). Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) and Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) started the bottom half of the first with a walk and single. Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) executed a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position before Proper cleared the bases with her seventh home run of the season!
Proper then added to the Brockport lead with an RBI single in the third inning, knocking in Lazzaro who reached on a walk and stole second base to get into scoring position. Delaney Buckley picked up her second hit of her perfect three-for-three game, to put runners on first and second. Wachna then connected on a 0-1 count pitch to send the ball sailing over the center fielder and the wall for another three run Golden Eagle homer to put Brockport ahead 7-0. The Blue Devils quickly changed pitchers which momentarily turned immediate results as the next three batters were out on two groundballs and a line drive.
However the Golden Eagle bats once again sprung to life as the fourth inning dawned upon them. Brockport was close to putting the game out of reach for the Blue Devils and Ferchen initiated the final step for the Golden Eagles with a single up the middle before adding to the school individual and career record for stolen bases with her 25th of the season. Harris singled up the middle to score the speedy senior outfielder.
The next two batters reached on fielder's choices before Buckley got her third hit of the game and reached second base on an error. Wachna then reached base on another Blue Devil error that allowed Proper and Buckley to score the final runs of the game.
Kibling threw a masterful game to push Brockport on to fight another day. She threw a complete game with five innings pitched while allowing a single earned run and striking out five.
Brockport doubled its hit total from the first game to second, with 15 hits combined. Â The lone run scored by the Golden Eagles against Geneseo came in the third inning when Nicole Atkins (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville) hit a two out double before getting pinch ran for by Stephanie Scala (Shrub Oak, NY/Lakeland). Scala reached third on an infield single from Ferchen and scored on Harris' infield single.
Brockport plays tomorrow at 1 pm with the opponent yet to be determined. The Golden Eagles will face whichever team loses between Oneonta and Geneseo.
