Box Score The College at Brockport Softball team played a tight game but gave up four runs in the third inning and went on to suffer a 7-1 loss Saturday afternoon to Cortland in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament in Cortland and was eliminated from the playoffs.
Brockport (20-18 overall, 10-8 SUNYAC) found itself in a one-run deficit after two innings but tied the game in the top of the third. Senior Nicole Atkins (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Pinch runner Stephanie Scala (Shrub Oak, NY/Lakeland) advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third as senior Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) laid down a sacrifice bunt. With one out and the tying run 60 feet away, senior Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) dug in and hit a single through the left side, scoring Scala.
Freshman Karleigh Eaton (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) led off the fifth inning with a single before Atkins nearly grounded into a double play but advanced to second on a throwing error by the second basemen. A fielder's choice and a single from Ferchen put runners on first and second with two outs but another fielder's choice ended the inning for the Golden Eagles.
The Red Dragons scored four runs in the third and two in the fourth to cap off a 7-1 win. Junior Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) pitched two innings and struck out one in her ninth loss of the season. Junior Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) came in for four innings and struck out one over the final four innings.
