Empire 8 Game
Bob Boozer Field – Brockport, N.Y.
BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team opens its home schedule on Saturday as they host Hartwick College, with kickoff set for Noon.
The Golden Eagles most recent outing was a definitive road win that came on Sept. 5 against Oberlin College. Brockport downed the Yeomen to the tune of 44-7, with productive offense paired with staggering defense proving to be the perfect recipe for success.
Dan Andrews led the way with three scores, all coming in the first 20 minutes of play.
Wayne Bonsell was back directing the offense, after sustaining a season-ending injury a year ago. The senior picked up right where he left off, throwing 21 completions for 283 yards and two touchdowns.
The defensive unit also came up big, holding the Oberlin offense to a mere 161 yards of total offense. The Golden Eagles obliterated the Yeomen passing game, allowing only 58 yards and just seven completions on the day. The Brockport "D" also forced a fumble and
Alex Egglinger snagged a pick-six for the Green and Gold's final score of the day.
Heading into this week's matchup, head coach
Jason Mangone's squad has enjoyed the bye week. Hartwick on the other hand enters this weeks contest with a pair of wins. The Hawks picked up a season opening victory over Western Connecticut State on their home turf, a 34-23 decision. Hartwick stayed home for their second win of the season, downing Newport News Apprentice School, 41-14.
The two teams will face off for the seventh time in series history on Saturday. A year ago, the Golden Eagles extended its series-winning streak to three, with a 17-12 win in Oneonta, N.Y.
Brockport used solid performances from
Chase Venuto and
Dan Andrews to bring home the win. Venuto threw for 171 yards, including a 48-yard hook up with
Andrew Mrozek for the opening score. Andrews rushed for a huge 191 yards, picking up a 65-yard run that ended in a touchdown.
Following the Golden Eagles faceoff with the Hawks, the Brockport squad will gear up for the 2015 Courage Bowl, hosted by St. John Fisher. This year marks the 11th year of the Courage Bowl, a game which honors Camp Good Days and children fighting cancer. The Courage Bowl will kick off at 6 p.m. in Rochester, N.Y.
