Brockport Football: Game One Preview

Game 1 – The College at Brockport at Oberlin College
Saturday, September 5, 2015 – 1 p.m.
Bailey Field - Oberlin, Ohio

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Football team opens its 2015 season on the road on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Ohio to face the Yeoman of Oberlin College in a non-conference game starting at 1 pm.  Since 2000, the Green and Gold are 10-5 on opening day and have won their past three season openers.

This will be the third ever meeting of the two teams and Brockport's first trip to Oberlin.  Brockport is undefeated, outscoring Oberlin 93-25 in the first two meetings.  The teams first met in 1988 in Brockport.  The Golden Eagles cruised to a 48-15 victory on their home turf.  Brockport faced Oberlin in its first game of the season in 2014 and won in convincing fashion, 45-10 at home.

During last season's game, Eric Malave caught a school-record 13 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.  Brockport's strong defense held the Yeoman scoreless for over 30 minutes of play while tallying 70 tackles.  James Rupp and Jake Brickler recorded 11 and 10 tackles respectively.

Head coach Jason Mangone starts his third season at the helm after posting a 5-5 record last season.  The 2000 Brockport grad has a career record of 18-11 as a coach.  Jay Anderson enters his second season as head coach for Oberlin.  The Toledo graduate brought in six new coaches this season after posting a record of 2-8 last season.

Quarterback Wayne Bonsell returns to Brockport's lineup this season after an injury cut his 2014 campaign short.  The senior hopes to improve on his 9-1 record with the help of running back Dan Andrews who is back for his junior year at Brockport.  The Rochester native ran for 1,106 yards last season, propelling himself to fourth in the Brockport all-time rushing leaders.  With two seasons remaining, Andrews in 1,534 yards away from the number one spot on the Brockport all-time rushing list.

After this weekend, the Golden Eagles have a bye week before returning home on Sept. 19 to face Hartwick College in the home opener and their first Empire 8 game of the season.
