Box Score OBERLIN, Ohio – The College at Brockport kicked off its 2015 football season with a bang on Saturday, downing Oberlin College (0-1) in decisive fashion, 44-7.
The Golden Eagles (1-0) were led by
Dan Andrews, who picked up right where he left off in 2014, rushing for 101-yards on the day, including three touchdowns. The junior found his way into the end zone on the Golden Eagles' opening drive to take an early 7-0 with 11:54 to play in the first quarter.
It continued to be all Brockport, after the defensive unit forced a three-and-out on the Yeomen's first possession. Again, it was Andrews who worked his way into the end zone after five carries, tacking on six points with 3:51 to play in the quarter. A
Tyler Perna extra point gave the Golden Eagles a 14-0 lead.
The Green and Gold posted another pair of scores in the second period, starting with their first possession of the quarter. Andrews continued his hot start, streaking seven yards for the touchdown, and the 21-0 advantage.
After a big defensive stop, including an 11-yard sack by
Austin Dean, the Golden Eagles offensive unit again found the back of the end zone, this time on just a three-play drive.
Wayne Bonsell connected on two passes, including a five-yard toss to
Ian Gilhousen, resulting in a Brockport touchdown. Perna's kick attempt was true, pushing the Golden Eagle lead to 28-0.
Both teams traded possessions, until Oberlin was finally able to break through the Brockport defense, to post a score with 1:46 to play in the half. The 28-7 count would stand, as a 38-yard Brockport field goal attempt from Perna fell short to close the half.
The second half proved to be just as action packed as the first for the Brockport squad, and it was no surprise that Andrews provided the spark for the first Golden Eagles scoring drive. After a pick-up of six and 11-yards, Bonsell found Gilhousen again, this time for 44-yards and the score to push ahead 35-7 with a Perna extra-point.
Head coach
Jason Mangone and the Golden Eagles did not let the fourth quarter slow them down, as they added the finishing touches in the form of two more scores. A 34-yard field goal from Perna gave Brockport a comfy 38-7 lead. The Golden Eagle defense was stifling throughout the contest.
Alex Egglinger added a pick-six in the waning minutes of the quarter to post a final score of 44-7.
The Golden Eagles were firing on all accounts, picking up 169-yards on the ground, and 283-yards through the air. Bonsell notched 21 completions and two touchdowns on the day, with
Jerry Thompson as his favorite target, with nine receptions for 90-yards. Gilhousen had a day, with two touchdowns on just three catches.
Nick Vallone aided the rushing games, picking up 43 yards on nine carries.
On the defensive side,
Nathaniel Keith III led the charge with 10 tackles, including a tackle for loss. Egglinger also snagged seven tackles to go with his 31-yard interception.
Tarik Bennett added four solo tackles, including a seven-yard sack. The defensive unit held Oberlin to just eight first-downs and only 58 passing yards, for a mere 161 yards of total offense.
The Green and Gold will enjoy a bye week before they return to action. Brockport will be back on the gridiron on Sept 19 when they host Hartwick College in their home opener with kickoff set for noon.
