BUFFALO, N.Y. – Forward
Clifton Lyerly recorded his career-high on Friday with 28 points to lead the College at Brockport men's basketball team to a 89-79 win at Buffalo State on Friday.
The Golden Eagles improve to 8-4 on the year and 3-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Bengals fall to 9-4 on the season and 3-3 in league play.
Hamed Shamseldin added 20 points and six assists towards the Golden Eagles totals, shooting 7-of-13 from the field.
Matthew Smith and
Devonn Gavin each finished with eight points, with Smith picking up four rebounds and three assists.
The Golden Eagles were golden from the field, shooting a scorching 55.2 percent from the field and an even hotter 57.1 percent from three-point range. Brockport edged the Bengals in several categories, with 18 points off 14 Buffalo State turnovers, and won the battle in the paint by a count of 44-42.
After some back-and-fourth action to start the contest, the Golden Eagles picked up the lead with five minutes left in the half, and never looked back. After a 11-1 run, featuring a pair of scores from Lyerly, a
Levi Pace lay-up and a Shamseldin trey, the Green and Gold lead hit the double-digit mark for the first time in the contest, with a 38-28 advantage.
Head coach
Greg Dunne's squad closed out the first half with a strong offensive showing, and took a 44-33 lead into the break.
At the half, Shamseldin led the Golden Eagles with nine points. Gavin,
Patrick Modzelewski and Smith each netted six points. Brockport shot a hot 51.4 percent (19-of-37) from the field and knocked down four three's.
Brockport came out of the half as strong as they finished the first, and in under five minutes of action, a Lyerly old-fashioned three-point play gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the contest at 58-40.
A strong Green and Gold defense held off the Bengals, and consistent offense production kept Brockport at a healthy distance from their counterparts. A Pace lay-in followed by a Shamseldin three with seven minutes remaining gave Brockport a 75-58 lead.
A tested Brockport squad was able to stave off a late surge from Buffalo State, who worked the Golden Eagle lead to five with a minute and half left in regulation. Sound shooting from the Green and Gold at the charity stripe sealed the deal, as the Golden Eagles brought home the 89-79 win.
Brockport will be back in action on the road Saturday, Jan. 16 against Fredonia in SUNYAC play with tip off set for 4 p.m.
