Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brockport beaten on overtime buzzer beater at Fredonia, 85-82

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team fell just short against Fredonia on Saturday when the Blue Devils hit a last second three, downing the Golden Eagles 85-82.

Brockport falls to 8-5 on the season and 3-3 in conference play, while Fredonia improves to 4-9 on the year and 3-4 in league action.

Devonn Gavin led the Brockport scorers, netting 28 points on the day, shooting 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from the field. Hamed Shamseldin added 19 points towards the Golden Eagles totals, while Clifton Lyerly picked up his first double-double of his career with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Patrick Modzelewski worked into double figures as well with 11 points.

As a team, Brockport shot 45.7 percent (32-of-70) from the floor, and fired 50 percent (5-of-10) from three-point range. The Golden Eagles edged their counter parts in the paint, with a tally of 50-46, and fought for 14-second chance points.

In an extremely close contest, the Golden Eagles seemed to always be just a step behind the Blue Devils. Brockport trailed throughout the entire first half of play, but never let the deficit build to more than eight points, while more often being within just a few points of their counter part.

It took the opening eight minutes of the second half for the Golden Eagles to pick up their first lead of the contest, but after a bucket in the paint from David Clark, Brockport recorded a 51-50 edge. A Lyerly weave through the paint on the following possession gave Brockport their largest lead of the contest at 53-50 with 11:22 to play.

Down the stretch both teams took their turn with the lead as back-and-forth action ensued. With just over a minute in regulation, a pair of Shamseldin free throws gave Brockport a 69-67 edge. Fredonia had the answer with a layup evening the score and forcing overtime.

Gavin struck first for the Golden Eagles in overtime, but the foot race continued as Fredonia evened the count on the following possession. The Blue Devils built a four-point lead with three minutes to play, but by the final minute of play the Golden Eagles had whittled it down to one on a Shamseldin layup.

With 16 seconds remaining, a Fredonia free throw gave the Blue Devils an 82-80 lead, but with two seconds remaining, Gavin weaved through the lane to tie the contest at 82-82, forcing a Fredonia timeout. With less than two seconds on the clock, the Blue Devils inbounded and connected on a contested three, downing the Golden Eagles 85-82.

The Golden Eagles will return home for their next contest, a rematch of a Brockport buzzer beater against Oswego that turned into an ESPN Sports Top 10 Play. The Golden Eagles will tip against the Lakers on Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
