Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brockport drops close battle against Oswego, 84-74

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Poor second half shooting plagued the College at Brockport men's basketball team on Tuesday, as the Golden Eagles fell against Oswego, 84-74.

The Golden Eagles fall to 8-6 on the year and 3-4 in the SUNYAC while the Lakers improve to 10-4 on the season and 3-4 in league play.

Despite shooting 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field in the first half, a cold second half hindered the Golden Eagles. The Green and Gold edged the Lakers in the paint with a 36-26 advantage, and picked up eight points off turnovers.

Devonn Gavin led the Golden Eagle scorers with 21 points, shooting 64.2 percent (9-of-14) from the field. Clifton Lyerly and Hamed Shamseldin both worked into double-digits, with Lyerly netting 17 and Shamseldin adding 12. Levi Pace came up big in the paint, pulling in eight boards and four blocks to go with five points. Olusola Adeniran picked up seven rebounds to go with eight points and a pair of blocks.

The first half proved to be a close battle, as each team took their turn with the lead throughout the period. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early four-point lead after a pair of free throws and a layup from Shamseldin. The hot start was quickly erased when an Oswego free throw knotted the contest at 10-10 with 14:49 to play.

A six-point swing at the 11 minute mark, featuring a Gavin jumper and a pair of layups from Patrick Modzelewski and Pace evened the contest at 20-20. The Golden Eagles saw the Laker lead swell to nine, before closing the half with an 11-2 run to take a tied score of 39-39 into the break.

At the half, Gavin led Brockport's scoring efforts with 10 points. Lyerly and Shamseldin each chipped in seven by the midway point. As a team, the Green and Gold shot 50 percent (16-32) from the field and beat the Lakers in the paint, with a count of 24-14.

The second half of action opened just as the first, with each team taking their turn with the lead. But things quickly changed for the Golden Eagles, as the sharp shooting Lakers continued to connect on the deep ball, while the scoring well ran dry on the Brockport end.

With 3:26 to play, the Brockport deficit reached its largest point at 13 after a pair of Oswego free throws made the count, 74-61. A Gavin three and a Lyerly bucket cut the Laker lead back to single digits at 74-66 with 2:20 to play, but the Golden Eagles couldn't mount a big enough comeback to erase their deficit, eventually falling 84-74.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Jan. 22 when they head to Potsdam.
