BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team stumbled out of the gates on Friday evening against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponent New Paltz and was unable to mount a comeback as it fell to the Hawks 77-56 in its second conference game of the week.
Brockport's (5-4 Overall, 1-1 SUNYAC) normally strong possession offense had an off day turning the ball over 28 times dooming the game from early on. The Green and Gold were outscored 23-11 in the first quarter but were able to outrebound the Hawks 45 to 35 collectively in the four quarters of play.
Hannah Spencer played with little regard for her body in an effort to ignite Brockport's offense, successfully completing multiple three point plays towards the end of the action. On these multiple occasions she drove towards the lane, leaving the defender scrambling to get back in on the play. Once Spencer was behind the defender it was all over. She hit the brakes hard and leapt into the air for a jump shot both at the beginning and at the end of the third quarter. The plays resulted in a basket and the defender crashing into her for the and-one bonus.
On the first occasion Spencer successfully completed the play with 7:14 left on the clock in the third to pull the Green and Gold within 12 points. Her second three-point play came with 39 seconds remaining as the Hawks led 56-39. Spencer kick started the Golden Eagles offense in the fourth quarter with another signature play. Following an Olivia Suhr rebound Spencer raced down the court pulling up on a midrange jumper from the wing as two Hawks collided into her. She drained the shot while sinking the free throw to make the score 59-42 in New Paltz's favor.
Jenna Lividini and Marissa Pike were the only Golden Eagles to sink shots from beyond the arc as both were able to provide some spark to Brockport. Pike made the most of her six minutes played, scoring five points as she was able to contribute with an all-out effort as she also secured a couple of big rebounds.
Spencer led Brockport scorers with 15 points while Faith Welch and Suhr also topped double digit totals with 12 and 11 points respectively. Hannah Rehbaum was a major factor why Brockport outrebounded New Paltz as she had eight defensive rebounds to go along with four offensive boards. Suhr led the team with three blocks.
Brockport remains at home with another SUNYAC game Saturday against Oneonta with a scheduled tipoff at 2 p.m. Be sure to stay up to date on all your Golden Eagle scores and awards by following @BportAthletics on Twitter and by liking the "Brockport Golden Eagles" Facebook page.
