Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Earns 20th Win On Senior Day

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Brockport volleyball earned their 20th win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Nazareth on Senior Day for outside hitter Sam Holdredge. The team now sits at 20-2 overall, while Naz falls to 17-6.

Brockport had to fight back from an early hole in the opening set as the Golden Flyers jumped out to a quick 10-7 lead. Holdredge helped serve the team out of that hole, acing the Nazareth passers to even the game at 10 before serving the team to two more points and giving them a lead they would never relinquish. DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore had six kills in the set including the final two which gave Brockport the 25-22 victory.

It was much of the same in the second, as Nazareth led for the first half of the set, opening up a five-point lead at 16-11 before the Golden Eagles began to close the gap. An 8-2 Brockport run capped off by a Kathleen Irwin service ace helped them regain the lead at 19-18. The remainder of the set went back and forth until Ortiz-Whittemore killed a ball in transition to give the Golden Eagles a 25-24 advantage before a Nazareth attacking error closed out the set, 26-24.

It was a different story in the third and final set, as Brockport led from the opening point. The team opened up a nine point lead at 14-5 behind four kills apiece from Holdredge and Ortiz-Whittemore. Nazareth fought back to bring themselves within three late in the set, but it was to no avail as The Golden Eagles completed the sweep, taking the third by a score of 25-21.

Ortiz-Whittemore led the squad in kills with 17, which was a new career-high for the Niskayuna, N.Y. native. Not far behind was Holdredge, who excelled on her senior night, killing 13 balls while digging eight more, and adding two service aces.

Holdredge was part of a defensive unit that dug up 46 balls, led by Aimee Spilman and Christa Mickol who combined for 17. Noelle Poloncarz was also solid defensively with her 7 digs, and the junior backed that up by assisting in 45 Golden Eagle kills (15 per set).

Kelly Waters and Brianna Richardson rank 1&2 in the conference in hitting percentage, and kept up that pace tonight, combining for 13 kills while hitting .333 and .429, respectively.

Brockport will look to build on their ten-game winning streak this weekend when they travel down the road to RIT for four matches on Friday and Saturday.
