ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Women's volleyball took home two more victories on day one of the RIT Invitational to improve their record to 22-2 overall, and extend their now 12-game winning streak.
Game 1 vs. St. John Fisher: W, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-8)
The victory over Fisher was a smooth one, with Brockport outpacing the Cardinals in kills (38-11), aces (12-0), assists (36-11), and digs (30-29).
After an easy first set victory, Fisher made things a bit more interesting in the second set when they took a 13-9 lead early on.
Maddy Taylor put an end to that when she came to the service line and served five straight points for the Golden Eagles, including an ace which gave them a 14-13 lead.
Emma Stoltz came off the bench to provide a late spark for Brockport, killing three balls late to help the team take the set 25-19.
The third set was never close, as Brockport saw five different players register kills, while acing Fisher passers seven times. Freshman duo
Lindsey Luce and
Elena Grossman came in to close out the set for Brockport, putting down the final two kills of the match.
The attacking game was extremely balanced in this match, with
Sam Holdredge leading the way with nine kills.
Brianna Richardson and
Kelly Waters were not far behind, combining for 14 kills.
Aimee Spilman served four of the teams 12 aces, and also led the squad defensively, recording 10 digs. Holdredge (3) and
Noelle Poloncarz (2) each had multiple service aces as well, with Poloncarz adding 29 assists to her stat line.
Game 2 vs. DeSales: W, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-17)
The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start in the first set against DeSales, using three straight Richardson kills to take an early 3-0 lead in a set that they would control throughout. Brockport put their opponents away late when Taylor served two straight aces and Holdredge killed a Poloncarz set, sealing the deal in the first.
The team found a different route to victory in the second set, having to fight back from an early 4-2 hole. The set was back-and-forth throughout, and Brockport did not gain the lead permanently until the final two points of the set which they eventually took 25-23. It was a balanced offensive attack in the second, with all six Brockport starters registering a kill in the stanza.
Brockport cruised to victory in the third and final set behind stellar defensive play. The team recorded three blocks in the set, and had eight in the match, led by Waters who registered five.
Stoltz, Richardson, and Waters paced the team offensively, combining for 25 kills. Richardson (.545) and Waters (.636) continue to hit at extremely high clips, pacing the SUNYAC conference in that category.
Poloncarz dished out another 34 assists, and added 11 digs which was second only to Spilman who dug up 13.
Volleyball will continue play at the RIT Invitational tomorrow when they square off with Trine at 10 am and Utica at noon.
