CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's soccer team picked up a big road win on Saturday in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, downing SUNY Cortland 2-1.
The Golden Eagles improve to 7-5-1 on the season and 3-4 in league play while the Red Dragoons fall to 8-6 in 2016 and 4-4 in SUNYAC action.
Brockport came out of the gate with a purpose, scoring two goals in the early minutes of play.
Christina Leonardo netted her second goal of the season when she picked up her own rebound and finished inside the left post to take the early 1-0 lead at the 3:30 mark.
It was just nine minutes later that Brockport would post its second goal, this time a
Stefanie Drago set up that led to a
Serena Sauerwald scored for the 2-0 advantage. The Green and Gold defense also came to battle, blanking the Red Dragons through the half to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, the sound play continued for the Green and Gold, with the defense holding their counterparts at bay for the majority of the half, until Brockport saw Cortland break their silence in the 85th minute with a goal conversion from a throw in. The Green and Gold would hold strong, securing the 2-1 victory.
The Golden Eagles made the most of their offensive opportunities, with eight shots on the day, four of which were on goal. The Green and Gold were also awarded two corner kick chances.
Catherine Eliasson got the start, and saw all 90 minutes of action, making four stops in the win.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action when they return home for the final weekend of the regular season, when they are set to host Plattsburgh State on Oct. 21 and SUNY Potsdam on Oct. 22. Brockport will celebrate senior day, and honor its seniors in a ceremony held prior to Saturdays contest.
