Sauerwald lifts Brockport over Plattsburgh in Overtime Thriller, 2-1

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's soccer team needed two overtime periods to post a crucial win in the final weekend of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday, an exciting 2-1 win over Plattsburgh State. The win boosts the Green and Gold in the SUNYAC standings, to fifth overall.

The Golden Eagles improve to 8-5-1 in 2016 and have a 4-4 mark in league play while the Cardinals fall to 10-7 on the season and are now 5-3 in conference play.

The Green and Gold had to battle the weather in addition to the Cardinals, in a water logged contest. The Golden Eagles were able to find the back of the net in the final three minutes of the opening half when Kaitlyn Niedermeier beat the Plattsburgh net minder to take the 1-0 lead.

At the mid-way point, the Golden Eagles had the advantage in shots with an 11-6 count, with seven shots on goal while holding to their 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Green and Gold saw their counterparts sneak in a goal in the 68th minute to knot the contest at 1-1. Neither team was able to overcome the elements and their counterpart to work in a goal in regulation, forcing overtime.

In the second overtime it was a Brockport throw in that set up the go-ahead Green and Gold goal, when Serena Sauerwald put the ball away in a scramble in front of the net to give the Green and Gold the 2-1 win.

It was a close contest all around, with Brockport narrowly edged in shots 19-18, but taking the shots on goal category by a margin of 13-9. The Golden Eagles had a slight edge in corners as well, with a 4-3 count.

Catherine Eliasson picked up the start and saw all 116:39 of play, while making six saves on the day.

The Golden Eagles will wrap up the regular season at home tomorrow when they host SUNY Potsdam at 1 pm. Brockport will honor its 13 seniors in a ceremony held prior to the contest.
