FREDONIA, N.Y. – The volleyball team took the first match of their final SUNYAC Pool Play weekend on Friday, beating Oswego in straight sets. The win moves the Golden Eagles to 25-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in conference play.
The first set was a game of runs, as Brockport hopped out to an early 8-4 lead before Oswego came back with a run of their own to knot things up at 8-8. The teams traded points for a while until
Sam Holdredge killed three straight balls for Brockport, giving them a 16-13 advantage. Another Laker run allowed them to tie the game at 23-23, but Brockport was able to close out the set, capping off the 25-23 win with a huge block from
Brianna Richardson and
Jamie Schlesinger.
Brockport got off to a hot start in the second stanza when Schlesinger went on an eight-point service run to give the team an early 8-2 lead. They would hold that lead for a majority of the set until a late seven-point run from Oswego knotted the game at 22-22. After trading points for the remainder of the set, Brockport was finally able to pull out two in a row from a Schlesinger kill and
Kathleen Irwin ace, giving them the 27-25 second set victory.
It was smooth sailing for the Eagles in the third set, as they grabbed the first three points of the set and never surrendered that lead. The match was put away late when Brockport went on a seven-point run behind three straight aces from Schlesinger. A Richardson kill sealed the deal, giving Brockport the 25-11 win in the set and completing the 3-0 sweep.
Sam Holdredge and Richardson led the team in the attacking category, killing 15 and nine balls, respectively. Holdredge also recorded a block, and joined by Richardson (4), and DeAnne Ortiz-Whittemore (2), and Schlesinger (1) in that category.
Brockport aced Oswego passers 14 times in this match, led by Schlesinger, Irwin, and
Aimee Spilman who each had four.
Spilman dug up a team-leading 20 balls to go with those four service aces, and also added two assists.
Noelle Poloncarz was once again the leader in the assists category, dishing out 33 while digging nine balls and serving an ace.
Brockport had three hitters hit .350 plus in the match, led by Richardson who hit .444. Schlesinger (.353), and Holdredge (.351) were also extremely efficient hitters.
Brockport will play their final two regular season SUNYAC games tomorrow, needing just one victory to secure the top seed and home court advantage for the conference playoffs. They'll square off with host Fredonia at 10 am before wrapping up with Potsdam at 12:30 pm.
