NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Brockport volleyball team defeated Plattsburgh in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-14) to move to 17-2 (4-0 SUNYAC), while the Cardinals fell to 10-10 (1-3 SUNYAC)
The first set was even out of the gate, with the teams trading points until the 9-9 mark. Plattsburgh went on a mini-run to give themselves a 15-11 advantage, but the Golden Eagles fought back when
Sam Holdredge went on a six point service run behind three
DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore kills to regain the lead at 18-15. After
Noelle Poloncarz pushed a ball to the back corner giving the Golden Eagles a 23-18 lead, two Cardinal service errors closed out the set for Brockport.
Plattsburgh came out firing in the second set, taking an early 11-5 lead, but the Golden Eagles were able to fight back yet again.
Brianna Richardson put down one of her eight kills on the day to bring the team within three before Ortiz-Whittemore killed a ball down the line to tie the game at 12-12. It was a back-and-forth game for the remainder of the set until Holdredge came to the service line with the score tied at 20-20 and served the final five points of the set for Brockport.
The Brockport offense turned it on in the final stanza, as 18 of the teams 25 points came off of kills. A late six-point run behind two kills apiece from
Lindsey Luce and Holdredge put the set away for the Golden Eagles, as they took it 25-14.
Ortiz-Whittemore led the team in the attacking category with her fifteen kills, and was followed by the middle-blocker duo of Richardson and
Kelly Waters who combined for fifteen of their own. Waters and Richardson currently rank 1 & 2 in the SUNYAC in hitting percentage, and kept up that pace tonight, hitting .875 and .500, respectively.
Poloncarz had another 30-assist outing, dishing out 32 to go with her six assists and four kills.
Maddy Taylor and Aimee Spillman each had two assists as well, and were the team-leaders in the passing category, combing for 36 digs.
Brockport continues SUNYAC Pool Play tomorrow when they face New Paltz at 10 am and Geneseo at 12:30 pm.
