BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team lost a nail biter to D'Youville College Friday night by a score of 73-67 in the first day of the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament.
The Golden Eagles and Spartans were close all night. Brockport (0-2) forced 18 turnovers and were able to convert those into 24 points. Unfortunately, the Green and Gold were unable to catch fire behind the arc as they shot only 5-for-24 from deep.
The Golden Eagles came out firing on all cylinders going on a 5-0, but the Spartans would battle back to tie the game up at 8:11 on the clock. After a close first half that featured six ties, Brockport found themselves down 36-34 going into the break.
Emily Nestler made her presence felt as she finished with 12 points and six rebounds in the first half, but she wasn't alone. The bench played a big part in the Golden Eagles staying in the game, coming up with 10 points and six rebounds.
In the second half, Brockport kept it close with the help of
Faith Welch and
Hannah Rehbaum. Welch scored 10 points and had three timely steals that kept the Spartan attack at bay. Rehbaum chipped in seven points of her own while grabbing five rebounds. However, the Golden Eagles were unable to make up for cold three-point shooting in the second half and saw the game slip away.
The Brockport star of the night was Nestler, who finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks for her first double-double as a Golden Eagle. Rehbaum was two boards short of a double-double of her own, finishing with 11 points and eight rebounds. Welch added 12 points of her own and four steals.
The Golden Eagles will host Morrisville on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 pm for Day 2 of the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament.
