MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team scored four touchdowns in the first frame, including two scoop and scores, as the Golden Eagles beat Morrisville State 44-20 in an Empire 8 matchup.
The Golden Eagles improve to 6-3 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. The Mustangs remain winless on the season with a mark of 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the Empire 8.
Brockport wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two defensive touchdowns in the first three minutes of play.
Terry McDonald forced a fumble on the fifth play of the game that was picked up by
Ryan Johnson and returned 61-yards for his first touchdown of the season. Three plays later, McDonald forced his second fumble of the game, scooped it up himself and ran 17-yards for his career touchdown. Both extra point attempts by
Brett Renzi were good, giving Brockport an early 14-0 lead at the 12:16 mark.
Eric Yaeger downed a 51-yard punt on Morrsiville's own one-yard line. The Brockport defense forced a three-and-out, only allowing Morrisville to gain seven yards.
Joseph Ortiz returned the punt nine-yards to put Brockport at Morrisville's 32-yard line.
Joe Germinerio connected with
Nick Prince for a 13-yard gain, breaking into the red zone. Brockport lost five yards on the next two plays but Ortiz hauled in a 23-yard catch from Germinerio for his first score of the day.
Another three-and-out by the Brockport defense gave the Golden Eagles the ball back just 48 seconds later. Facing 3rd and six, a pass interference penalty on Morrisville gave Brockport a fresh set of downs at the Morrisville 14-yard line. On the next play, Germinerio found
Ian Gilhousen in the end zone for a 14-yard catch, putting Brockport ahead 27-0 after the first quarter.
Morrisville controlled the second frame and scored two touchdowns, cutting Brockport's lead to 27-13. The Mustangs gained possession at midfield with 28 seconds remaining but their drive was cut short as
Alex Egglinger intercepted a pass and returned it 30-yards to the Morrisville 23-yard line. With four seconds remaining, Renzi drilled a 40-yard field goal through the uprights to give Brockport a 30-14 lead at the half.
It took Brockport only three plays to find the end zone to start the second half.
Dan Andrews carried the ball 18-yards to the get Brockport to midfield. Germinerio connected with Ortiz for a 50-yard touchdown and Renzi's kick attempt was good, giving Brockport a 37-14 lead.
A back and forth second half wouldn't see either team score for over 25 minutes of play. Midway through the final frame, Germinerio found a hole and darted 70-yards for his first rushing score of the game. Renzi converted the extra point and Brockport held on for the 44-14 win.
The Mustangs held the advantage in total offense by a count of 427 to 323, narrowly outrushing the Golden Eagles 137 to 110. Brockport tabbed 15 first downs on the day, having possession for 21:44.
Germinerio finished 17-for-21 passing for 205-yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, the freshman average 8.4 yards per carry with 11 carries for 92-yards. Andrews finished the day with 38-yards off of 12 carries. Ortiz led all receivers with 89-yards off of five catches for two scores. Gilhousen finished with three catches for 56-yards and one touchdown.
The Brockport defense was led by
James Rupp with 11 tackles, including five solo, and one pass break up.
Julius Brunson tabbed seven solo tackles while
Matt Szymanski recorded eight tackles.
Terry McDonald had 1.5 tackles for loss while
Ryan Johnson,
Jake O'Connell, Nathaniel Keith, Alan Montgomery,
Dalton Cooley and
Romario Gordon each had one.
The Golden Eagles will return home next weekend for their regular season finale against Buffalo State at 1 pm. Brockport will honor seniors
