Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brockport drops low-scoring affair to Hobart, 65-52

GENEVA, N.Y. – Despite forcing 21 turnovers, The College at Brockport men's basketball team fell in non-conference action on Tuesday at Hobart College, 65-52.

The Golden Eagles pick up only their first loss of the season, moving to 6-1 on the year while the Statesmen now sit at 4-2 in 2016.

Brockport charged out of the gate, rushing to a quick 7-0 lead following a pair buckets from Clifton Lyerly, a Hamed Shamseldin layup and a Marcus Blythers free throw. After Brockport saw the Statesmen whittle their lead to just two, four points from Abdoulaye Sow and a Blythers jumper gave the Green and Gold their largest lead of the half at the midway point, with a 13-5 edge.

The Green and Gold's counterpart continued to work to erase their deficit, and the Golden Eagles saw their advantage shrink to just one with 7:29 to play in the half. After a pair of ties, Hobart pieced together a six-point swing to take their first lead of the contest heading into the half at 23-19.

Six Golden Eagles worked into the scoring column in the first half, with Lyerly, Shamseldin and Sow each turning in four points at the midway point. Lyerly and Blythers each had four rebounds as well. Brockport snagged six steals and forced 12 Hobart turnovers in the first half.

Out of the break, the Golden Eagles saw the Statesmen knock down a pair of triples and a midrange jumper to quickly find themselves in a 12 point hole. It took until the 16th minute for a Green and Gold basket to fall, as a Blythers jumper and Jake Mitchell three cut the Hobart lead to just seven with 16 minutes to play.

A pair of Brockport triples from Sow and Dwanye Daniel were key to the Green and Gold keeping within striking distance, making the count 37-30 at the 12:44 mark. A 7-0 run from Hobart however put them just out of reach, as the Golden Eagles struggled to score, unable to pull back to within single digits.

The Green and Gold closed the contest with three scores, but it wasn't enough, as Brockport fell 65-52.

Shamseldin led the Golden Eagle scoring efforts with 12, while Sow chopped in nine points, five boards and three assists. Bylthers added eight and five rebounds as well, while Dwanye netted six points.

As a team, Brockport forced 21 turnovers, which they turned in for 18 points, and also picked up six fast break points.

The Golden Eagles will return to conference play when they head north for a two game stretch. Brockport kicks off the weekend at SUNY Potsdam on Dec. 9 and visits Plattsburgh St. on Dec. 10.
