BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team secured a solid State University of New York Athletic Conference win to celebrate senior day on Saturday, bypassing SUNY Potsdam 92-76.
The Golden Eagles improve to 16-9 on the year and 11-7 in league play while the Bears are 1-24 on the season and 1-17 in conference action.
The high scoring Green and Gold offense was led by
Clifton Lyerly, who poured in a career high 31 points. The junior also dished out five assists and picked up a pair of steals in the win.
Levi Pace worked in a double-double, his first of the season, with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Patrick Modzelewski also reached double figures with 12 points and six boards.
Devonn Gavin netted seven, with
Olusola Adeniran and
Hamed Shamseldin each adding six points apiece, with Adeniran pulling down seven rebounds.
Brockport shot its second highest percentage from the field on the year, at 54.4 percent (37-of-68). The Golden Eagles crushed their opponents in several categories, with a 60-20 edge in the paint, a 41-21 tally in bench points, 14-4 in fast break points, and 24-12 in second chance points.
Head coach
Greg Dunne's squad came to play and took an early 11-3 lead after a pair of scores from Adeniran and Modzelewski, a Lyerly triple and a pair of layups from Pace and Gavin by the 15:08 mark. Each team took their turn with the lead, until at the 4:06 mark Brockport took the lead for good after a pair of Shamseldin free throws.
The Green and Gold quickly worked out to a nine point advantage with scores from Pace, Modzelewski, Lyerly and
Mitch Cote for a 41-32 advantage. The Bears posted a pair of scores to close the half as Brockport took a 41-26 lead into the break.
Lyerly led all scorers with 14 points at the half, with Pace adding six. Modzelewski netted five with Adeniran and Shamseldin each pitching in four points. The Golden Eagles shot a hot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the field in the opening half.
In the second half, it didn't take long for the Golden Eagles to establish a double-digit lead. With the help of a 7-0 run, with a triple, layup combo from Modzelewski and a lay-in from Lyerly to post a 54-43 lead to the 16:08 mark.
The Golden Eagles kept building on their healthy lead, and by the two-minute warning had built out to a 20 point advantage after a pair of buckets from Gavin to post a 87-67 lead.
Brockport held on down the stretch to bring home the 92-76 win and secure the No. 3 seed in the SUNYAC post season Championships.
The Golden Eagles will look forward to post season play. Brockport secured the No. 3 seed, and the right to host, as they welcome the No. 6 seeded Buffalo State on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
