GENESEO, N.Y. – A well balanced scoring effort help lead the College at Brockport men's basketball team past SUNY Geneseo on Friday night, 79-67.
The Golden Eagles improve to 12-7 on the season and 7-5 within the league while the Knights fall to 14-5 on the year and 8-4 in SUNYAC play.
Ten players worked into the scoring column for Brockport, with
Cordell Torres leading the way with a career-high 14 points and five rebounds.
Levi Pace chipped in 12 points and was one board shy of a double-double with nine.
Devonn Gavin netted 12 points to go with a stat line of five rebounds two assists and two steals, while
Ryan McCarthy finished with 10 points on the night.
Head coach Gregg Dunne's squad shot 40 percent (26-of-65) on the night, with a hot 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from beyond the arc. Brockport narrowly outmatched the Knights in rebounds (39-37) and in points in the paint (32-20). The Golden Eagle D forced 23 turnovers, which they turned into 22 points.
Reminiscent of the last time the Golden Eagles met the Knights, the contest proved to be a physical battle. After much back and fourth, the Green and Gold was able to work out to a six-point lead after a Gavin trey gave Brockport a 12-6 edge at 14:35.
After Geneseo worked for a pair of ties at the 12:16 and 7:59 mark, the Golden Eagles fought to maintain their lead. After a pair of
Marcus Blythers scores on back-to-back possessions, the Green and Gold posted their largest lead of the half with 3:47 to play at 26-19.
Brockport saw their lead disappear down the stretch, when a late Knights three gave Geneseo a narrow 32-31 lead. McCarthy answered with a trey for the Golden Eagles to close the half, and helped the Green and Gold take a 34-32 lead into the break.
At the half, Blythers and McCarthy led the Golden Eagles with nine points apiece. Blythers shot 3-of-5 from the field with McCarthy firing 3-of-4 from three-point range. Gavin chipped in seven points with
Cordell Torres adding six.
As a team, Brockport shot 33.3 percent (12-of-36) from the field with 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from beyond the arc. The Green and Gold forced 11 Knight turnovers, while only committing three.
In the second half the Golden Eagles were able to build some distance between the Knights. A fast break dunk from
Levi Pace helped the Golden Eagles set the tone, and post a 43-35 lead with 16:44 to play.
With a nine point run, featuring a Torres three and lay-in and a pair of layups from
Mitch Cote, Brockport was able to post its largest lead of the contest at 64-50 with just under eight minutes to play.
The Green and Gold worked to hold to their double-digit lead, and with help from the free throw line, were able to keep their distance and hold on for the 79-67 win.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Feb. 9 when they play host to Fredonia with tip off set for 7:30 p.m.
