Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Brockport banks in last second shot for SUNYAC win

GENESEO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team carried its strong play from Tuesday night's game into another State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup tonight defeating the SUNYAC leading Geneseo Knights 66-64 on the road with a bevy of late game heroics.

Brockport (12-7 Overall, 8-4 SUNYAC) were locked in a back and forth battle with Geneseo. The Golden Eagles held the lead over the Knights only in the first few minutes of play and finally the last second after Hannah Spencer received a pass at about half court dribbled inside the right side of the arc hitting a running jumper as time expired.

With less than four minutes to play Erin Cunningham came up with a big offensive rebound. Olivia Suhr's three point shot bounced off the rim and appeared to be going out of bounds before Cunningham came out of nowhere to gather the ball. Upon securing the board she found Suhr attacking towards the basket for a contested bank shot that cut Geneseo's lead to 60-55.

Schyler Laux came up with a big steal at the other end following another Suhr two point shot. Laux attempted a jumper on the offensive end that bounced around the rim into the hands of teammate Hannah Rehbaum. Rehbaum made the most of the second chance opportunity laying it in to cut Brockport's deficit to just a single point.

Brockport took the lead on its next possession with the shot clock winding down Faith Welch hit a three pointer utilizing Suhr's screen for an open look and a Brockport 62-60 advantage. The Knights were resilient and answered back tying the game with two free throws. Suhr put Brockport back on top with another difficult contested bank in the paint. The Knights again quickly moved down the court to even things back up so that they would have a chance to get the ball back with more than 40 seconds remaining on the clock.

A missed three pointer on Brockport's end looked to seal the Green and Gold's fate as the Knights grabbed the ball and strode confidently down the court. However freshman Megan Anagnostopulos's high pressure defense panicked the attacker out of bounds underneath the basket giving Brockport another shot. Anagnostopulos swapped spots with fellow freshman Hannah Spencer with six seconds remaining. Head coach Corinne Jones move proved to be brilliant as Spencer drained the game-winning shot.

Suhr was an absolute beast in the paint for Brockport. The senior forward missed only five shots all game, with three coming from downtown. On the night she shot 10-of-15 scoring 21 points while also tying for the team lead in rebounds with freshman Becky Rossier as the two grabbed eight apiece. Every time that Brockport was in need of a big basket to keep the Geneseo lead from stretching to an insurmountable lead, Suhr was the Golden Eagle with an answer.

Welch, Rehbaum, Laux and Anagnostopulos also stepped up their game in a highly competitive battle that showed the SUNYAC the Golden Eagles are not a flock to be taken lightly. Welch, Rehbaum and Laux all shot 50-percent or better while Spencer sank the shot to seal the win.

As a team the Green and Gold shot 28-of-58 for a 48.3-percent conversion rate which included five-of-10 from beyond the arc after the first half. The Knights held a seven point lead after outscoring Brockport 18-11 in the first quarter but the Golden Eagles responded with a 16-9 score in the second quarter to even things up at halftime.

Although the Knights appeared to pull away in the third quarter Brockport refused to give up and demonstrated true integrity that pushed the team closer to securing a top six spot in the SUNYAC's standings.

Suhr led the team with 21 points while Welch added 12, all from beyond the arc, Rehbaum added 10, Anagnostopulos totaled nine and Laux eight. The team shared the ball at an extremely efficient rate with Welch, Laux, Anagnostopulos, Cunningham and Suhr all recording at least a couple of assists.

Brockport returns home for another crucial SUNYAC game against Fredonia on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Fredonia currently sits in fourth place, just a single spot ahead of Brockport as it holds a 9-4 conference record compared to the Golden Eagles 8-4 record.
