Brockport holds on for 7-6 win over Nazareth

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport held off a charging Nazareth College team on Thursday to secure a 7-6 win.
 
The Golden Eagles keep an untarnished record at 6-0 on the season while the Golden Flyers fall to 4-3 on the year.
 
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start with back-to-back goals. Jessica Boddery buried a Kelly Wall set up to take the early 1-0 lead nine minutes into play. Hailey Boronczyk worked in a Keeley Rice pass to post a 2-0 lead with 17 minutes to play in the opening half.
 
Brockport saw Nazareth work into the scoring column by the six-minute mark with their lone goal of the half. Rice worked in a shot to give the Green and Gold a 3-1 lead heading into the break.
 
The second half saw an increase in scoring, with the Golden Flyers netting a goal  two minutes into play. Head coach Stephen Wagner's squad went on a scoring frenzy, working in three straight goals. The Boronczyk-Rice combo got things started with another Rice pass that led to a Golden Eagles goal. By the 16:19 mark, Hannah Cullen and Ciara McKeon each netted a goal to post a 6-2 lead.
 
After another Nazareth goal made the count 6-3, Kelly Wall netted the final Golden Eagles goal of the contest, burying an Andrea Zlinsky pass for the 7-3 lead. The Golden Flyers found a spark in the last seven minutes of the contest, connecting on three different attempts. The Golden Eagles defense held strong to close the contest, and secure the 7-6 win.
 
The Golden Eagles shined brighter than the Golden Flyers in several categories including shots (21-13), shots on goal 14-11), ground balls (23-18), and draws (9-5). Both squads went 21-for-23 on clear attempts, while the Green and Gold forced 21 Nazareth turnovers.
 
Defensively, Brockport had several players step up. Katie Curran and Cassandra Minerd each had three caused turnovers, while Lauren Mancini and Makensie Schuber each accounted for a pair of CTs. Mancini, Rice and McKeon each had three ground balls on the day, with Curran, Minerd, Shuber and Boronczyk each picking up two.
 
Sara Shaddock picked up her sixth win of the season, with all 60 minutes of action and five saves on the day.
 
The Golden Eagles return to the pitch on March 30 when they take on St. John Fisher College in East Rochester with a 4:30 opening draw.
