PITTSFORD, N.Y. – In a battle of ranked unbeaten's, No. 16, The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team rang victorious against No. 15 St. John Fisher College on Wednesday, 11-9.
The Golden Eagles held on to their unblemished record and improve to 7-0 while the Cardinals fall to 7-1 on the season.
Kelly Wall led the Green and Gold offense, posting a hat-trick, while
Makensie Schuber,
Samantha Dooling and
Jessica Boddery each netted a pair of scores.
Andrea Zlinsky and
Hailey Boronczyk each worked in a goal apiece.
Less than two minutes in the Golden Eagles found themselves trailing, but the deficit was short lived as Boddery worked in a shot unassisted to post a score of 1-1. The two squads traded scores again, with a SJFC goal at the 23-minute mark, followed by a Dooling goal at 20 minutes to play to even the score at 2-2.
The Golden Eagles worked out to their first lead when Schuber buried an unassisted goal less than a minute later to pick up a 3-2 advantage. After a third Cardinal score, the Green and Golden netted a pair, with Dooling setting up a Boronczyk score and Boddery netting her second goal of the contest for a 5-3 lead midway through the half.
After SJFC netted a fourth goal,
Kelly Wall put away her first score of the day with 8:39 to play in the half. The Golden Eagles traded goals again, with Wall scoring her 22nd goal on the year, and pushing the Green and Gold to a 7-5 lead. The Cardinals would sneak in a final goal before the half, with Brockport taking a 7-6 lead into the break.
The second half was a strong one for the Green and Gold, with three Golden Eagles netting three straight scores. Dooling opened the scoring less than a minute into play, working in a
Keeley Rice set up. Zlinsky and Schuber followed suit, each netting unassisted goals to post a 10-6 lead with 21:25 to play.
Brockport saw SJFC score a goal at the 21-minute mark, but a third Wall score pushed the Golden Eagle lead to 11-7. A pair of Cardinal goals to close the half weren't enough, as the Golden Eagles secured the 11-9 win.
The Golden Eagles edged their counterparts in shots (23-19), shots on goal (20-15), ground balls (20-18) and draws (17-5). The Green and Gold went a perfect 10-for-10 on clears and forced 14 Cardinal turnovers.
Schuber and
Courtney Szczesniak each accounted for two caused turnovers, with Szczesniak also snagging two ground balls.
Ciara McKeon scooped up five ground balls and 10 draws.
Sara Shaddock picked up her seventh win of the season on 60 minutes of action, snagging six saves in goal.
The Golden Eagles will open State University of New York Athletic Conference play on April 5 at Fredonia.
