ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Kelly Wall netted six goals to help lead The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team past the Rochester Institute of Technology on Wednesday in a tight overtime contest, 9-8.
The Golden Eagles keep their record untarnished, improving to 4-0 on the year while the Tigers fall to 1-1.
Six minutes into play, Brockport saw RIT score the first goal, but the score only spurred the Golden Eagles. At the 18:12 mark
Makensie Schuber got the offense going, burying an unassisted shot to knot the contest at 1-1. Just over a minute later, the Green and Gold took their first lead when
Ciara McKeon put away an
Andrea Zlinsky set up to post a 2-0 lead.
Again, it took the Golden Eagles just over a minute to find the back of the cage, this time off the stick of
Kelly Wall, who gave Brockport a 3-1 edge with 15:29 to play.
Brockport saw the Tigers work back into the offensive end, scoring three straight goals to reclaim the lead. Wall evened things up before the close of the half when she notched her 12th goal of the year, and made the count 4-4 heading into the break.
Out of the half, RIT got rolling right away with three straight goals to the 20:44 mark. The three-goal streak was what the Green and Gold needed to spark their own offense, as Wall found the back of the cage for four straight Brockport scores. Wall's final goal at the 10-minute mark gave Brockport an 8-7 lead.
The Golden Eagles defense couldn't hold off the charging Tigers as they snuck a shot in with seven minutes to play. Neither team was able to break the stalemate, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime period, both defensives stood tall, forcing a second OT period. With 1:08 left to play in the second extra period,
Keeley Rice snuck one in to give the Golden Eagles the go-ahead and the 9-8 win.
The Golden Eagles edged the Tigers in shots, with a tally of 26-19 on the day. The Green and Gold went 14-of-16 in clears, won 11 draws, and picked up 20 ground balls in the outing.
Rice not only netted the game winner, but also was a force on the defensive end. Rice caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls for the Green and Gold. Schuber wracked up two caused turnovers, and snagged two ground balls.
Jessica Boddery also scooped up four grounds balls, with
Courtney Szczesniak and
Katie Curran each getting two.
Sara Shaddock stood tall in goal for Brockport, picking up just under 65 minutes of play while posting five stops and a win.
Brockport will return home for their next contest, when they host St. Lawrence University on March 18 at 2 p.m.
