Brockport pushes past Geneseo, 11-6

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team used a balanced offensive attack to power past SUNY Geneseo in State University of New York Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, 11-6.
 
The Golden Eagles improve 9-2 on the year and 2-1 in SUNYAC play while the Knights fall to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
 
Things got off to a sluggish start, with a lone Geneseo goal in the opening period.
 
Head coach Ben Wineburg's squad caught fire in the second quarter, with five straight scores. Casey Cleary opened the scoring, burying an unassisted shot to even the count 1-1.
 
Marcus Palvino netted back-to-back goals to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the contest. Jake Giudice and John Countryman also found the back of the cage in the scoring spree, as Brockport posted a 5-1 lead by the 4:28 mark. The Knights worked in a shot before the close of the half, as the Golden Eagles took in a 5-2 lead at the break.
 
Brockport saw Geneseo open the second half with a score, but netted three straight in the period. Countryman, Palvino and Liam Cannon all worked in a goal to extend the Green and Gold lead to 8-3 to close the third period.
 
In the final quarter, The Knights again opened the scoring with a pair of goals. Cannon and Countryman scored a pair of goals as answers, with the Countryman goal coming in a man-down situation to take a 10-5 lead. The two teams traded goals to end the contest, with Giudice sending in the final Brockport score to post an 11-6 win.
 
Steven Gurin led the defense with four caused turnovers, with Palvino adding two CT's.  Zack Cook picked up an impressive 14 ground balls, with Gurin, Countryman and Colin Blind each picking up three each. Cook also picked up 18 face off wins.
 
The Golden Eagles outmatched their opponents in several categories, including shots (44-30), ground balls (34-20) and face offs (18-3).
 
Conor Nowak stood tall in the cage for all 60 minutes of action, picking up the win and snagging 14 saves.
 
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on April 16 when they travel to Oneonta with the opening face off set for 3:30 p.m.
