ONEONTA, N.Y. –
Liam Cannon's six goals helped lead The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team past SUNY Oneonta on Saturday in State University of New York Athletic Conference play, 15-6.
The Golden Eagles improve to 10-2 in 2016 and 3-1 in league play while the Red Dragons fall to 4-7 on the year and 0-3 in conference action.
Cannon led all scorers with six goals, while
Jake Giudice chipped in four.
John Countryman added two goals, with
Michael Gallagher,
Brendan Fitzgerald and
Marcus Palvino each finding the back of the cage once. Fitzgerald and Palvino each dished out four assists, with
Mark Robinson picking up two assists on the day.
The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start, with back-to-back goals from Gallagher and Countryman to take the early 2-0 lead. After Oneonta used a man-up opportunity, the Green and Gold netted another pair of scores, with Countryman adding his second and Fitzgerald working in a shot for the 4-1 lead with 8:49 to play in the first.
Brockport saw the Red Dragons connect again, but had the final say in the period when Cannon connected for his first score of the day to post a 5-2 lead to end the first quarter.
After Oneonta opened the second quarter with a goal, the Golden Eagles kept pace with a Giudice score for the lone goals of the period, as Brockport would take a 6-3 lead into the half.
The Golden Eagles traded goals with Oneonta to open the second half, with Cannon netting the opening goal and the answer after the Red Dragon score to post an 8-4 lead with 10:54 to play in the period. Oneonta netted a pair of scores, but Giudice ensured that Brockport had the final say of the quarter when he buried a Fitzgerald set up.
The final period was all Brockport, as the Green and Gold defense shut down the Red Dragons. The Brockport offense didn't let up however, as the Golden Eagles connected for six fourth quarter goals.
Giudice opened the period with back-to-back goals. Cannon posted three scores in the fourth quarter, interspersed with a Palvino goal as the Golden Eagles secured the 15-6 win.
Nick Smith and
Colin Blind each picked up a caused turnover to lead the Brockport D, while
Zach Cook snagged seven ground balls. Cannon and Steve Gurin each picked up four ground balls in the contest. Cook also picked up 13 face off wins in the circle for the Green and Gold.
The Golden Eagles edged their counterparts in shots (37-20), shots on goal (26-12), ground balls (26-23), and face offs (14-10).
The Golden Eagles will return to action on April 23 when they take on Oswego in Oswego, N.Y. with opening face off set for 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles will return home for their final contest of the year on April 30 against SUNY Postdam where they will honor their seniors in a ceremony held prior to face off.
