Brockport drops SUNYAC opener against Cortland, 11-3

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team opened State University of New York Athletic Conference play on Saturday against SUNY Cortland at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium, falling 11-3.

The Golden Eagles fall to 7-2 on the year and begin conference play with a 0-1 mark, while the Red Dragons improve to 4-5 and open SUNYAC play with a 1-0 record.

Brockport saw the Red Dragons open scoring less than a minute into the contest, but were able to knot the contest a 1-1 with 6:27 to play in the first quarter when Brendan Fitzgerald worked in a shot. Cortland would sneak in a second shot in the period, as Brockport trailed 2-1 at the end of the first.

In the second period, the Golden Eagles held their counterparts to just two goals, but would trail 4-1 heading into the break.

After a pair of Red Dragon scores to begin the second half, Liam Cannon buried a Fitzgerald set up for the Green and Gold's second score, and made the count 6-2 with just under seven minutes to play in the period. Another Cortland goal before the close of the quarter gave the Golden Eagles a 7-2 deficit heading into the fourth.

Cannon would net his second goal of the day to start the fourth and make the count 7-3, but unfortunately for the Green and Gold offense, that would be their final score of the contest. Cortland went on to score four straight goals to close the game, as Brockport ultimately fell 11-3.

The Green and Gold were just outshot in the contest, 34-30 and just missed in ground balls with a tally of 27-21. Brockport won seven face off's on the day, with Zach Cook getting credit for all seven wins.

Pat Quinlivan led the Brockport defense, credited with three caused turnovers, while Colin Blind led the way in the ground ball category with four pickups on the day.

Conor Nowak got the start for Brockport, snagging five saves in over 36 minutes of action. Dallas Meyers picked up over 18 minutes of play and three saves, while Trey Love saw over four minutes in goal.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on April 5 when they take on Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y.
