No. 9 Brockport downs Geneseo, 11-9

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 9 College at Brockport women's lacrosse team earned outright second place in the State University of New York Athletic Conference standings on Tuesday, downing SUNY Geneseo 11-9.

The Golden Eagles finish the 2016 season unbeaten at home and improve to 13-1 on the season and 6-1 in league play while the Knights fall to 10-5 on the year and 5-2 in conference action.

The contest proved to be a heated battle despite the frigid temperatures between the two teams battling for second place in the SUNYAC standings. Brockport saw the Knights draw first, with an early goal to take an initial lead. Makensie Schuber evened the count when she scored with less than two minutes into play.

Geneseo found the back of the cage again, but the score only spurred the Green and Gold, as they went on to score six unanswered goals. Samantha Dooling worked in a goal, with Schuber setting up a Jessica Boddery score to post a their first lead of the contest at 3-2.

Kelly Wall went to work, scoring back-to-back goals, for the 6-2 lead by the 7:30 mark. Schuber found the back of the cage again, with Wall working in a hat trick and posting the 7-2 lead with four minutes left in play.

A pair of Knight goals cut the Brockport lead to 7-4, but Hailey Boronczyk connected on her first goal of the day to have the final say in the half and give the Golden Eagles an 8-4 advantage heading into the break.

Boddery opened the half with a goal to give the Golden Eagles a 9-4 lift by the 23:13 mark. Brockport saw the Knights find energy, as they put away three straight goals. Schuber kept Geneseo in check, with a goal at the 16:16 mark to give Brockport a 10-7 cushion.

Geneseo wasn't done, as they continued to charge, and buried a pair of goals to pull within one with 9:42 remaining in the contest. Wall worked in an unassisted score to give Brockport the 11-9 lead with just over six minutes remaining in regulation. The Green and Gold worked hard to maintain possession down the stretch, and were able to hold on for the 11-9 win.

The Golden Eagles outmatched their counterparts in several categories, with a 33-20 edge in shots, a 21-10 advantage in ground balls and went 18-for-19 on clears. The Green and Gold forced 17 Geneseo turnovers and picked up 11 free-position attempts.

Wall led the Brockport offense with four goals, and also got work done on the defensive side, leading the squad with three caused turnovers. The junior also had a team high four ground balls, and finished two-for-three on free position shots. Katie Curran and Schuber also scooped up four ground balls with Hannah Cullen snagging three.
