BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 14 College at Brockport women's lacrosse team earned a ticket into the 2016 NCAA Women's Lacrosse National Championship.
Brockport will head to St. Mary's City, Md. where they will face off against the hosts St. Mary's College of Maryland on May 15.
The Golden Eagles learned their fate at 9:30 Sunday night, when they watched along with the rest of Division III to learn if their regular season resume was enough to propel them to post season play. The Green and Gold, which set a Brockport record this season for most consecutive games won at 11, earned their highest ranking of the season, breaking into the top 10 of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll at No. 9.
Brockport has gone toe-to-toe twice with the reigning National Champions and currently undefeated No. 1 SUNY Cortland. They had a tested meeting with their SUNYAC foes on April 19 where the two went into the half tied at 6-6, but the Golden Eagles ultimately were handed their first loss. The most recent meeting between the two squads took place in the SUNYAC Championship on May 7, where again, the Green and Gold gave the Red Dragons a run for their money. Cortland has averaged a goal differential of over 11 goals a game, but in the Golden Eagles last meeting, the Green and Gold were only edged by five goals, the closest margin of defeat the Red Dragons have seen this season.
The Golden Eagles will now gear up for their NCAA run, which will begin in the second round of the NCAA tournament on May 15. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. To view the complete 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Bracket,
