Brockport Football: Game One Preview

Game One
The College at Brockport vs. Hobart College
Saturday, September 3, 2016 – 1 p.m.
Bob Boozer Field – Brockport, N.Y.

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team opens its 2016 season at home on Saturday vs. Hobart College at 1 p.m.

The Golden Eagles will host the Statesmen for the first time since 1982.  When the team's last met, Hobart won 21-12.  Prior to that, Brockport won four consecutive years which saw two shutouts.  The Golden Eagles have a narrow edge in all-time points, outscoring the Statesmen 156-146, and winning five of the team's eight meetings.

Head coach Jason Mangone starts his fourth season at the helm after posting a 5-5 record last season.  The 2000 Brockport grad has a career record of 18-13 as a coach.  During the offseason, Mangone brought in Mike Fox from rival St. John Fisher College to serve as the Defensive Coordinator.

While at Fisher, Fox oversaw a defense that crushed over eight school and national records. His unit set the single game record with 11 sacks against Hartwick College in 2013.  That same defense also caused a school record 18 forced fumbles and was ranked second in the country in interceptions.

Seniors Dan Andrews, Alex Egglinger, Jason Howard and Ed Suriano will be the teams' captains this season.  The team has four returning Empire 8 All-Conference selections in Egglinger, Andrews, Mark Sanchez and Justin Torres.  Andrews brought home the Offensive Player of the Year Award while Egglinger was named to the Second-Team.  Sanchez and Torres were each honorable mentions.

Andrews is back for his senior season with the Golden Eagles.  The Rochester, N.Y. native was named a pre-season First-Team All-American by D3football.com.  Last season, Andrews finished as the national scoring leader with a 15.6 points per game average.

Andrews posted seven games with 100 or more rushing yards including his season best 256-yards against Utica.  The sport management major stands atop many Brockport football records, including career rushing touchdowns with 44, season touchdowns at 26, and moved to second on the career rushing list with 3,732 total yards.  Dan is 144 yards shy of the record of 3,876-yards set by Adam Rodger who donned the Green and Gold from 1995 to 1998.

After this weekend, the Golden Eagles will hit the road for two weeks to face Alfred State College and Hartwick College before returning home for the 12th annual Courage Bowl to benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times.  Brockport will host rival St. John Fisher on Sept. 24 with kick off slated for 4 p.m.
