BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team opened the 2016 season with a 4-1 win on Thursday against Keuka College at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
The Golden Eagles keep their record unblemished, improving to 1-0 on the young season, while the Wolves fall to 0-1.
The Green and Gold offense got things going early, when
Margo Tremaine found the back of the cage off an
Abby Meagher set up just over five minutes into play to claim the early 1-0 lead.
It would take 20 minutes for the next goal, this time off the stick of the Wolves, evening the count at the 27-minute mark. It didn't take long for the Golden Eagles to regain their lead however, as just over a minute later,
Mariah Clark worked in a score to post a 2-1 advantage, which would stand through the half.
Brockport fought to build on their lead and did so 10 minutes into the second half when Tremaine worked in her second goal of the contest. The Green and Gold defense stood strong, holding Keuka scoreless in the second half, but weren't done with their scoring, as Meagher worked in her own goal off a
Grace Beardsley assist to give Brockport a 4-1 cushion with 1:15 remaining in the contest. The Golden Eagles held on to their lead, and posted a 4-1 win to open their 2016 campaign.
Offensively Tremaine led the way with nine shots, while
Katherine Weyant fired off four, with three on goal. The Green and Gold were awarded eight penalty corners and worked for 16 shots on goal.
On the defensive side, Brockport held their opponents to just four shots on goal, and only allowed one penalty corner.
Sarah Beam earned her first start, seeing all 70 minutes of play in goal, and stopping three shots.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action when they open their home schedule on Sept. 7 against St. John Fisher College.
