BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's volleyball team split their opening day of matches at the Brockport Invitational, bringing their record to 10-2 on the season.
Game 1 vs. Medaille: W, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-23)
Brockport took the first match of the day against Medaille easily, moving them to 10-1 on the season.
The Golden Eagles got out to a fast start as they have so often this season, opening up a 4-0 lead on the Mavericks in the first set. Medaille would never get back within three, as a balanced offensive attack gave the team a 25-14 first set victory.
Emma Stoltz had the last two kills of the set, with both assists coming off the hands of
Rachel Fiser.
It was a different story in the second set, as Brockport found themselves down 8-5 early on. They turned the tables quickly however, going on a 5 point run to take a 10-8 lead. Medaille fought back to regain the lead at 18-7 before Brockport rattled off eight of the last nine points to take the second set 25-19.
The third stanza was another back and forth contest, as the Golden Eagles once again found themselves losing early on by a score of 10-5. A seven point service run off the hand of
Karly Oliver gave them a lead, but it was lost again soon after with another Mavericks run. The remainder of the set was back and forth, until Deanna Ortiz-Whittemore put away three balls late in the contest to seal the deal for Brockport.
Ortiz-Whittemore was the leader for the Golden Eagles in the attacking category, registering nine kills. Stoltz and
Jamie Schlesinger were second and third in kills, combining for 12 in the three sets.
Fiser entered the game late in the first stanza at the setter position, and ended up leading the squad in the assist category with 18.
Maddy Taylor dug up a team-leading 13 balls for the Golden Eagles, and Ortiz-Whittemore and
Aimee Spilman ranked second and third in that category, combining for 14 digs.
Game 2 vs. Mount Union: L, 0-3 (25-14, 25-19, 25-23)
After a tough first set that saw Brockport notch just 13 points, they fought back valiantly in the following two, pushing the Raiders to tight 25-20, and 25-23 sets.
The final stanza was as back and forth as they come, with each team trading four point runs to start the set, and neither team leading by more than three after that. Two kills apiece from
Kelly Waters and Stoltz late in the set forced a tie at 23-23, but it was not enough as Mount Union was able to take the final two points, sealing the victory.
The attacking game was extremely balanced in this outing, as Stoltz, Schlesinger, Waters, and
Sam Holdredge combined for 38 kills. Schlesinger contributed nine of those, and did not record a single attacking error, hitting for a team-leading .409 average.
Noelle Poloncarz dished out 36 assists, and added two service aces and a team-leading 16 digs.
Kathleen Irwin was second on the team in the digs category, registering five while acing the opponent passers twice as well.
The loss to Mount Union snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles, in which they dropped just four sets combined.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the court at 11 a.m. tomorrow for a match against Lycoming before squaring off with Canton at 3 p.m. in the final game of the Brockport Invitational.
